In the historic center of Madrid, Spain, a new addition to the Reina Sofía School of Music puts sustainability at the forefront of its design. The project provides a unique challenge as historic preservation of the existing building was crucial to the designs. Inside the school, Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has masterfully designed an interior environment that is calm and welcoming for its students and teachers, that fosters a sense of community among its users. An atrium is planned to be added to the school which will allow for a flood of natural sunlight to flow throughout the interior spaces. An open floor plan and light natural materials will allow for cheerful interior spaces and facilitate the reduction in the need for manufactured light. While the interior will be retrofitted and modified, the facades of the historic school will largely remain the same. The project is a phenomenal example of how we can preserve and protect our architecturally significant cities, while still adapting them and making them more sustainable. We’re all in this together #sustainability #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #architecture #architecturaldesign #design #educationalfacilities #adaptivereuse #historicpreservation #spainisharchitecture #historicallysignificant #greendesign

What if you have a great idea...but despite it being brilliant, it's not the best experience for your customers? Or what if it actually SCARES your customers? What do you DO? Well, that happened in new buildings across the world in the 1930s, it still happens now, and the answer might not be what you'd expect... As soon as buildings got taller than a few floors, we needed elevators (or, if you're British, lifts). But early elevators were less than half the speed of today’s express lifts and, as buildings got taller and taller, elevator rides got longer and longer. By the 1930s, when the first skyscrapers were opened, people were getting anxiety attacks because as they ascended, they could feel the building sway, they could hear the clanking noises of the machinery...and they had plenty of time shut in the small enclosed elevator for their worries to take hold! At the same time, elevator operators were replaced by a simple push-button panel, and so you may well be in there on your own...which only exacerbated the problem. There was no instant solution, so the answer? Distraction! Mirrors appeared in lifts, so now you could check your appearance before arriving at your floor, taming wind-blown hair and reapplying lippy. Carpeting to the lower walls deadened the sound and made the elevator feel more solid and luxurious. Walnut veneers, light-up buttons and shiny chrome details added to the luxe vibe, all making you feel safer. But the ultimate in distraction was music. One of the earliest known installations of elevator music was in Chicago's 37-storey Palmolive Building in 1948 but, as a corporate office building, it was not open to the general public. The Statler in Dallas was the first hotel in the world to use elevator music to convey guests to its 1001 ensuite rooms in total luxury. The hotel had a helipad on the roof, a 21" Westinghouse TV in each room and cost $16M...that's around $190M at today's value! Today, you can still stay at The Statler...or you can even live there, as much of the building is now apartments. Disappointingly though, they don't seem to have elevator music these days! But next time you get in a lift/elevator and you - almost without thinking - check your hair in the mirror, notice how bright and shiny it is in there...and maybe there's even music for you to listen to...think about that. It's all there because the building management wants you to arrive at your chosen floor without even really noticing your journey there. One final bit of distraction technique that makes me laugh out loud every time - the weight capacity plate in the lift at the old Hospital Club in Covent Garden (before it closed in 2020). "Capacity 9 persons, 1000KG or 1 horse 5,050 bananas 6,666 hen's eggs 2,941 pigeons 88 haddock 10,526 pound coins". PS DON'T FORGET TO WATCH THE VIDEO, BELOW! The $1M elevator pitch…the crazy idea that took music to a whole new level!

I've always been fascinated by historical sites, especially the challenge of preserving our past while adapting to present-day needs. The debate often centers around how much a site can be altered without losing its historical significance. This dilemma brings to mind the philosophical concept of The Ship of Theseus, prompting me to consider the more nuanced details of preservation. Does anyone else struggle with this philosophical dilemma? If so, how do you tackle it in the context of historic preservation? #franklintn #historicpreservation #landscapearchitecture
In our work as landscape architects and planners, we place great importance on the preservation of historical sites. This practice involves conserving a location's physical elements and safeguarding its cultural and historical value. By honoring past elements with present-day design, we can craft spaces that narrate a storied history and establish a connection between individuals and their heritage. Through a thoughtful design process, we can intentionally craft spaces that help future generations gain knowledge from history. Our involvement in historic preservation plays a vital role in shaping the constructed environment in a manner that shows respect and pays tribute to the legacy of those who came before us. Working on numerous historic sites across Franklin, GDC values the delicate balance between innovative ideas and preserving our rich heritage. #historicfranklin #preservation #thisislandscapearchitecture #design #communityengagement

Let’s talk about EMPHASIS in interior design. Displaying your artwork thoughtfully can make a big impact. As an artist, I’m always thinking about design, and emphasis is more than just placing art symmetrically. Here are a few tips: ? Use contrasting colors to make your artwork pop. ? Isolate the piece to highlight its importance while keeping it proportional. ? Consider placement—will it draw the eye or be a pleasant surprise in the periphery? Looking to create real emphasis in your space? Art from an independent artist can do just that. Want to really elevate your space? Check out my canvas selection to have my work printed on long-lasting, fine-art quality canvas. ??? It's the perfect way to add emphasis to your space. ?? https://lnkd.in/daYkaewA Featured: “The Matrix” Acrylic On Canvas?

Have ever you stepped foot into a space that leaves you speechless, excited, full of emotion, or in complete amazement? Comfort. Curiosity. Wonder. Contemplation. Architecture leaves an indelible imprint on our lives, becoming part of our story. It shapes and moves us – physically, spiritually, and emotionally. The power of architecture is woven into the fabric of everything we do at Grace Farms. The River building, designed to break down barriers between people and nature, offers visitors the meaningful opportunity to embrace new perspectives as they make their way through each of its glass-enclosed volumes. No two views are the same. It brings people from all walks of life together every single day. A demonstration of how architecture moves us towards creating an active community, locally and globally. It is also an expression of sustainability and the impact of building ethically, underscoring the work of the Design for Freedom by Grace Farms movement which seeks to end modern slavery in the building materials supply chain. This global movement’s mission is to create a more humane built environment and showcase architecture’s capability of moving us towards justice. It is also a demonstration of how architecture moves us towards peace – nestled into the surrounding 80 acres of restored meadows, woodlands, and ponds, it is a place for contemplation, appreciation, and respect for wildlife, the natural world, and our place in it. At the heart of all of this is the extraordinary vision of our CEO and Founder, Sharon Prince – that architecture has the ability to move us towards achieving humanitarian outcomes across sectors. As we prepare to celebrate our 9th Anniversary, we are inviting you to think about how architecture moves you. This meaningful anniversary will see us welcome a 31-musician chamber ensemble of musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by LPO 2023/24 Fellow Conductor Luis Castillo-Brice?o. The moving program will incorporate our theme Architecture Moves Us, further illuminating our mission and work. To learn more and purchase a ticket, visit: https://lnkd.in/eSMSPdaJ In the meantime, we invite you to share a time when architecture moved you – tell us about your experience in the comments.
