It was genuinely an honour to again emcee the Moranbah Miners’ Memorial commemoration on Friday night, when the Moranbah community remembers the miners lost in the nearby mines, on roads to and from work, in the camps, and from mining-related illnesses, and embraces those miners’ family, friends and colleagues. A year after last returning to Moranbah, it was great too to see long-needed projects in and around the town either well underway or with funds committed and planning at an advanced stage, including the new Moranbah Hospital, refurbishment of the civic centre, and replacement of the flood-prone low-level Phillips Creek Bridge with a new flood-proof high-level crossing. Still in need of urgent attention is the Peak Downs “Highway” from the coalfields to the Mackay coast. This is an increasingly busy but increasingly dangerous road. Overall, it would be great to see far more funding allocated in the next four years to work needed in the Queensland regions – like the Isaac Region – that fuel the State’s prosperity. For example, I wonder what the comparative return on investment might have been had the six-and-a-half thousand million dollars being spent on Brisbane’s cross-river rail project instead been invested in regional infrastructure ?…

After years of deliberation, South Cambs DC has approved plans to transform Bourn Airfield into a new village, complete with 3,500 homes. This decision follows concerns about the area's water supply, which have now been addressed through increased clarity on future water sustainability. The development has faced significant delays due to the council's commitment to responsible growth. The decision was influenced by the recent approval of a separate housing project in Cambridge, which outlined plans for a new reservoir and the establishment of a Water Scarcity Group to tackle supply issues. This project marks a significant step forward in addressing the region's housing crisis, as local councils grapple with increasing targets. While the development promises to deliver much-needed homes, it also highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing growth with environmental concerns, particularly water scarcity. https://lnkd.in/ekiG-2bk?

This is a significant start to deal with the challenges we face to make sure Tasmania remains a great place to live and work for all of us.?As planners, we are thinking ultimately about how we all live from day to day.?Not just for you or me, but your kids and grandkids. We desperately need strategy that is linked across sectors and agencies, and funded so that it can be implemented.?We have the fastest regulatory planning system in the Country, but the strategic support for the future is underdeveloped,?The Population Policy picks up some of PIA’s asks from recent campaigns, but these were not very ambitious (as many of my colleagues told me) because we are still trying to build the planning system. More is needed if we are to get the best for Tasmania and Tasmanians from all of the current reforms going on with this, the regional land use strategies, the Tasmanian Planning Policies, linkage to national programs, funding and everything else going on in the planning space at the moment.? Felix Ellis, Shane Broad, Helen Burnet, David O'Byrne, Emma Riley, Planning Institute of Australia
PIA Tasmania has written to Premier Rockliff to acknowledge the release of the ‘Planning for the Future’ policy. We highlighted the importance of continuing strong leadership at the State level in directing and managing growth across Tasmania. Good strategic planning systems cohesively align infrastructure, housing and economic agendas and provide an effective line of sight between national level priorities such as the National Housing Accord and draft National Urban Policy, and local outcomes. PIA also welcomes the announcement of additional funding for medium density infill development outcomes in our urban environments. This provides the foundation for ongoing leadership in encouraging density done well that delivers liveable outcomes and contributes to great places and communities. We suggested in our letter that support for a small number of pilot projects is the most effective way to use this funding and showcase good outcomes for residents and communities.?
