#supplychain #transportation Is the next port crisis around the corner? It's been discussed for a while now: East Coast ports are up for labor negotiations with the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) as the current contract expires in September. Just a few months ago, surveys showed that many shippers were planning to move peak season cargo up by a month so that they won't be short when those ports potentially close due to the labor dispute. Today nobody is in a hurry. According to the more recent CNBC Supply Chain Survey, this is because shippers feel more comfortable that things are under control, which in turn is because these negotiations aren't making headlines. There is also the fact that East Coast longshoremen haven't been on strike since 1977. They certainly aren't as fickle as their West Coast counterparts. Still, it's amazing to see that when it's not in the news, it's not a concern. If so, wouldn't we be significantly better off just shutting the media down? #truckl #innovation

Disruptions, everywhere disruptions......How will this affect your supply chain ecosystem? "Contract negotiations have broken down between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and port operators. The current agreement, which covers about 45,000 dockworkers at facilities including six of the 10 busiest US ports, expires September 30". #supplychain #disruptions #supplychainmangement https://lnkd.in/gn4bR9qt

Tick tock... T-minus 5 days and counting. As we stare down the largest supply chain disruption since covid, it's being reported that both the International Longshoremen Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance remain locked in a media blame game instead of being at the table actively negotiating. It's estimated that for each day of a strike it will require 5 days to unwind the backlog once the 22 ports reopen. The costs are astronomical on paper and elsewhere. The current administration is remaining on mostly the sidelines despite a US Labor Deparment outreach effort last week. Here's to hoping the right people are working as hard as ever to get this resolved. #supplychain #logistics #freight #ILA #strike

Important Update: ILA-USMX Labour Negotiations and Contingency Planning The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) are in prolonged labour negotiations, with a key deadline set for January 15, 2025. If an agreement is not reached by this date, labour strikes could disrupt operations at major U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports, leading to significant supply chain challenges. To prepare for potential disruptions, shippers and forwarders are advised to begin planning alternative solutions and evaluating contingency options. Potential Disruptions ? Port Operations: A strike could affect key ports, including New York/New Jersey, Savannah, Charleston, Houston, Miami, and Port Everglades, causing delays and congestion across these critical hubs. Possible Scenarios and Their Impact 1. Short-Term Strike (1-2 days): ? Impact: Temporary congestion at ports, with delays lasting 5-7 days. ? Considerations: Minimal cost impact, although force majeure declarations could result in cargo being rerouted to international ports. 2. Extended Strike (1-2 weeks): ? Impact: Severe congestion at ports and Container Freight Station (CFS) facilities, with trucking and rail networks strained to capacity. ? Considerations: Increased costs and longer transit delays across the supply chain. Recommended Mitigation Strategies ? Alternative Routing: Leverage our import and export services through Chicago, to bypass affected East and Gulf Coast ports. These routes provide an effective way to minimise disruptions. ? Intermodal Solutions: Our managed intermodal services offer end-to-end cargo visibility and control, providing a single-source solution to ensure continuity during significant disruptions. When exploring these options, it’s important to balance transit times, costs, and individual shipment requirements. For more details about transit times, costs, or personalised planning, please reach out to your Atlantic Freight representative. We are monitoring the situation closely and will keep you informed of any updates. Thank you for your cooperation and trust as we navigate these potential challenges. ?? Ports are balancing their responses, such as not charging for storage during a work stoppage but maintaining awareness of free time accumulation. For shippers, the message is clear: expedite logistics and prepare for potential delays, especially for time-sensitive or refrigerated cargo. The proactive communication and extended operational hours reflect an industry bracing for major disruption, where preparation will be key to minimizing supply chain chaos. 4o

?? Supply Chain Alert ?? Despite efforts to constrain oversupply, U.S. ports continue preparations for a strike that could paralyze an even greater portion of the American supply chain as labor negotiations drag on between the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and East/Gulf Coast ports. The potential consequences are huge: delayed shipping, higher prices, and hardship for companies depending heavily on imported goods. In reply, several businesses are diverting their shipments to West Coast ports such as Los Angeles and Long Beach, which is increasing congestion there. The West Coast's International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILA) shoreside labor has said they will honor the strike, as would the ILWU shoreside faction, thus creating a potential national shipping nightmare. Expectation: Wait for the expected delays, route changes, and more...

A Port Strike Could Shake the U.S. Economy ?? As negotiations stall, a potential strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association on Tuesday, October 1, could disrupt operations across East and Gulf Coast ports, marking the first such event since 1977. This could affect everything from bananas and autos to critical materials for U.S. manufacturers. Retailers and industries are bracing for delays, price hikes, and supply shortages that could ripple through the economy. LOTTE Global Logistics North America is actively collaborating with shippers to reallocate assets and mitigate these disruptions, ensuring our customers stay ahead of potential challenges. ?? #SupplyChain #Logistics #PortStrike #Freight #Shipping #EastCoast #GulfCoast #GlobalTrade #AssetManagement #LOTTEGlobalLogistics #SupplyChainManagement #PortShutdown

As the deadline approaches, trucking companies and freight rail operators are racing to manage billions in trade at 14 major U.S. ports. The International Longshoremen’s Association has indicated a potential strike starting at 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday, October 1, if a new contract isn't finalized with port management. Last week alone, these ports, including New York/New Jersey, Baltimore, Norfolk, Savannah, Miami, New Orleans, and Houston, saw nearly $14 billion in trade, with $2.7 billion arriving just on Friday. As one logistics CEO stated, “Time isn’t on the side of importers.” It’s critical for businesses to stay informed and prepared during this uncertain time. #Logistics #Shipping #Trade #PortStrike #SupplyChain CNBC, Lori Ann LaRocco
