Empowering Youth and Highlighting BIPOC Leaders in Sports Administration In partnership with the White Center Heights Elementary School PTA, we launched an initiative to curb youth violence and recognize the vital contributions of BIPOC professionals in sports administration. Through this program, we showcased the vast opportunities beyond athletic participation to elementary school students. Thanks to the incredible efforts of Shoshanna Rubinstein Cohen and her peers, White Center Heights Elementary students gained access to athletic opportunities despite limited district funding. Shoshanna’s vision was to inspire young athletes by introducing them to male and female leaders in sports, demonstrating the diverse career paths available in athletics beyond being a participant. I had the privilege of interviewing Carlos Enriquez, Tara Davis, Christopher Whitehead and Marissa John, Esq. all of whom shared their journeys as athletic administrators. White Center students asked insightful questions, and these professionals provided valuable insights into their roles. The students left inspired, seeing individuals who look like them thriving in positions of leadership within the sports industry. A heartfelt thank you to: ? “Under Title IX, schools receiving federal funding are required to provide students with equal opportunities to participate in sports and get athletic scholarships. But a new Government Accountability Office watchdog report shows despite higher enrollment rates than men, the overall rate of women playing sports was 14 percentage points lower during the 2021-2022 school year. According to an Aspen Institute analysis, girls in Oakland are twice as likely as boys to dislike PE. Statewide, California has the seventh largest gap in sports participation between boys and girls at over 15%. Given the proven benefits of physical activity and sport participation we need to take this seriously and reevaluate our paradigms through which we view PE and sport experience. At Ball for Life Oakland (www.ballforlifeoakland.org) we intentionally design our PE and sport based experiences through a Social Emotional Learning and Belonging lens, adapting the CASEL framework as well as Design for Belonging. In our most recent survey, 100% of girls reported that PE was the most fun part of school. The most game-changing finding from our State of Play Colorado: Aspen to Parachute report? The promise of youth soccer — by far the most popular sport among the region's Latino/a youth, only 15% of whom get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. What if local community leaders used soccer as a tool for social change? What if soccer could more intentionally be applied to create belonging for youth and educational advancement? The Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys could create a national model for a more coherent soccer system that drives positive educational, mental health and other benefits for young people and the region.

Last week, I launched a weekly newsletter about education in New Hampshire's capital region. I know many of my connections here don't care about the ins and outs of school board business in Pembroke or the contentious new middle school project in Concord. I have had the immense privilege of becoming involved with this fantastic organization as a board member. More info below, but in short, BDL is growing and impacting local NYC students and communities. However, we are also still very much in the startup mode so if you are looking for a place to give that will have an outsized and local impact, BDL is a great candidate. Why Brooklyn Debate League? For those that follow Humans of New York on Instagram, you may remember their 12 part series on Jon Conyers (one of our founders), who used the platform to explain how Speech & Debate and in particular his coach DiCo (our other cofounder) was a critical lifeline for him as a kid growing up in the Bronx. https://lnkd.in/esCdhnGQ Following the HONY feature, DiCo and Jon launched Brooklyn Debate league as an independent organization focused on: Partnering with underserved schools to create debate teams, through intensive support programing Sending staff coaches into schools to develop teams, coach students and train teachers to coach teams long-term Hosting in person and zoom tournaments Taking students to local, state and national championships Running a speech and debate summer camp A few relevant stats: Only 2% of low-income NYC public schools have debate teams that even compete at the state or national circuit. BDL is currently at 7 school partnerships (up from 2 a few years ago)! BDL has qualified students for state and nationals championships two years in a row now Last May, of the twelve kids from NYC who qualified for the National Championship in Congressional Debate, only one of them attended a low-income public school, and BDL built his team and sponsored his trip to Nationals. New York State Championship School Data 2022 (pre-BDL): 61 total schools competed, 3 of them were non-specialized NYC public schools 2023: 57 total schools competed, 4 of them were non-specialized NYC public schools (including 2 BDL partner schools) 2024: 67 total schools competed, 7 of them were non-specialized NYC public schools (including 5 BDL partner schools) New York State Championship Student Data 2023: 7 kids from BDL partner schools qualified 2024: 14 kids from BDL partner schools qualified 2025: 6 kids from BDL partner schools have already qualified for States, and another 7 are half-qualified. Just two weeks ago, our debaters competed in the Villiger tournament. Last year, zero debaters were from low income schools. This year, as a result of BDL’s work, 30% of the debaters were from low income schools, and 3 of our debaters made it to the final round! Next weekend, our debaters will compete at the Coolidge tournament held at Yale, where they’ll get a campus tour from some of our alums!
