'The?Lumpkin?Limelight' is a weekly feature highlighting students, faculty, and staff practicing our five strategic pillars:? 1) ENGAGEMENT 2) INVESTING IN GROWTH AND QUALITY 3) FOSTERING INNOVATION 4) DEVELOPING RESOURCES 5) CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT BS in Hospitality and Tourism -?https://lnkd.in/dBG7KzmA The Hospitality and Tourism program (HTM) prepares students for a leadership position in the global hospitality and tourism industry. The BS in Hospitality and Tourism is a relatively new degree program and recently became part of the School of Business but has 30+ year-old roots at Eastern Illinois University as a concentration within other programs. The curriculum provides industry-specific courses, includes either a Business Administration or Entrepreneurship minor, and integrates relevant courses from other disciplines such as recreation administration, geography, and communication studies. Career paths for graduates of the program include Hotel General Managers, Sales and Convention Managers, Wedding Planners, Group Sales and Meeting Managers, Dining Room Managers, Human Resource Managers, and Franchisee Support Managers. Many students attend an annual Hospitality Career Fair in Chicago hosted by DePaul University to identify potential internship or career placements and build their professional network. Students engage in authentic learning experiences such as guest speakers, industry-based field trips, a hotel management simulation, wine and beer production courses, conference attendance, and community-based projects. Two industry-based internship-type experiences are required. The HTM program relies on our alumni, scattered throughout the country but with a large presence in the Chicagoland area, for its support of the program and providing professional development advice and opportunities to current students. When asked for assistance, our alumni always answer the call, displaying a true spirit of hospitality and serving as role models for which we are most grateful. #lumpkinlimelight #hospitality #tourism #adventure #business #entrepreneurship #travel #dining

My first job was at McDonald’s, and the experience taught me more than just flipping burgers— it was a crash course in teamwork, communication, punctuality, and accountability. I worked after school and on weekends, alongside other high school students who filled the shifts from late afternoon to closing. Mornings and the early shifts, on the other hand, were run by older workers — often in their second careers — who kept the restaurant operating until the afternoon. That dynamic created an environment where we learned essential life skills. Showing up on time, being dependable, working well with others, and engaging with customers weren’t just part of the job; they were lessons that shaped how we approached work and life going forward. Today, things look different. Walk into a fast food restaurant now, and you’re more likely to see middle-aged workers filling the shifts that once belonged to high school students. Some might say that’s a good thing — that students shouldn’t “waste time” in jobs like these and instead focus on internships or experiences tied to their future career aspirations. But here’s the reality: employers across industries consistently tell me they’re willing to teach technical skills, but they need workers who bring reliability, responsibility, and strong customer service skills to the table. Jobs like the one I had at McDonald’s provide those foundational experiences. These aren’t skills that always need to be taught in a classroom or a carefully curated internship. They come from showing up, learning to work as part of a team, and meeting expectations — even in jobs students might not initially see as career-oriented. These roles are both a necessity and a stepping stone. They teach professionalism and purpose in ways that can’t always be replicated elsewhere. And if you’re wondering how long ago that was? Let’s just say, back then, there were ashtrays on the tables.

Today, I had the pleasure of witnessing something truly gratifying—a moment of well-deserved recognition as one of our employees was promoted from apprentice to Assistant Storekeeper. It got me thinking about the state of our workforce today. We are living in a time where education levels are at an all-time high, where diversity is celebrated, yet job opportunities remain scarce for so many skilled and talented individuals. This employee, with a diploma in purchasing, couldn’t land a job, even after completing internships at two different companies. After a long, frustrating period of tarmacking—endlessly searching for work—she took on an apprenticeship. And let me tell you, after applying for the role and going through the interview process, she outperformed everyone. She proved herself to be the best candidate for the position. But here’s where we often fall short. Too many times, we overlook the talent right in front of us. We assume that just because someone holds a junior position or doesn’t have years of experience in management, they aren't capable of excelling in a more senior role. We’re quick to look outside, thinking that external hires will bring about transformation and fresh perspectives. But the reality? More often than not, they end up blending into the same culture, contributing no more than the average. We must challenge this mindset. We need to look within, recognize the potential, the drive, the dedication of those already in our ranks. Because when we give them the chance to rise, they often exceed our expectations. Let’s stop letting assumptions limit our workforce and instead empower those who have already proven their worth.
