Yesterday was World Hand Hygiene Day - May 5, Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. Washing hands prevents illnesses and spread of infections to others. Handwashing with soap removes germs from hands, this helps prevent infections. During Covid many of us were very good at washing hands frequently and using alcohol-based hand rubs. Are we still using good hand hygiene practices? How often do we wash our hands each day? Are we effectively washing hands? Do we wash hands, all surfaces for at least 20 seconds. World Health Organization ?(WHO) - Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. Rinse well. Dry your hands with a clean towel or air-dry them. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.?Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Centre for Health Protection (CHP) Hong Kong. Follow the seven hand cleaning steps to wash or rub hands for 20 seconds. The seven steps are washing palms, back of hands, finger webs, back of fingers, thumbs, finger tips and wrists. When hands are not visibly soiled, they could be cleaned with 70-80 per cent alcohol-based hand rub. CHP theme of Hand Hygiene Day 2024 is "Power of Hand Hygiene", highlighting the significance of hand hygiene practice on prevention and control of infectious diseases, hence encouraging everyone to incorporate hand hygiene into their daily lives as a non-negotiable routine. #handhygiene #publichealth #washhands
