According to a survey conducted by the GoodRx Research team, 32% of Americans had a prescription sent to the pharmacy that was ultimately not filled. The most common reason for not filling the medication was cost, followed by forgetting to pick the medication up, the medication being out of stock, and the inability to get to the pharmacy in time. Moves by state and Federal governments to increase patient access are well intentioned but I don’t think I agree with their approach. #Priorauthorizations (PA) are perceived as being about preventing someone from getting a drug. But that is not the case. There are good reasons for PA requirements. For instance, there are drugs that are controlled substance with the potential for abuse and PAs are an effective way to ensure oversight. There are also a lot of drugs that are also very expensive, and while their use is legitimate, we have to ensure appropriate utilization to prevent an unnecessary financial burden for the plan. Based on reviews by @ RxBenefits’ independent pharmacists, we find that 35% of the time, there are appropriate, clinically equivalent, lower cost options available for the plan and members. https://lnkd.in/gNs3VD3F

Another example of restricting patient choice by having a payor direct where a patient goes to get care. And in this case, having to go to a non-healthcare setting to pick up some of their medications. This from a pharmacist who owns Cubic/MemberRx and former OPA board member but not a current member. This is why we are advocating for government to restrict arrangements that limit patients from choosing their pharmacy of choice. In addition to ensuring that we have a practice site code of ethics and patient charter to mitigate situations where patient choice is restricted among other intentions to address workplace issues. #pharmacists #pharmacy
