Regulations that impact EMS agencies can come from rules that, at first look, have nothing to do with EMS. For instance, a new proposed Federal Trade Commission rule regulating horseracing and track safety. If finalized, a new rule released today would require horse racetracks to have at least two adequately staffed and equipped ALS or ALS-adapted vehicles at the track during training and racing hours. Additionally, racetracks that operate a training track in addition to a main track are required to have at least 1 ALS ambulance, ALS-adapted vehicle, BLS ambulance, or BLS-adapted vehicle available during training. Finally, racetracks must implement training for all ambulance staff, create protocols for incidents involving more than one injured person, and create incentive programs to retain skilled and certified ambulance staff. In doing so, he provides useful context about the challenges of the work and the expertise required to do it. In doing so, he fosters empathy and cooperation.
