Vermont is the nation’s most rural state — as of 2020, 65% of its population lived in rural areas — and had one of the highest rates of homelessness. For this year’s #WorldDreamDay, we’ve been thinking about our dream - a day where homelessness is a thing of the past. Too often people are forced to stay in precarious living situations or pushed onto the streets with no support or advice. With the introduction Renters Reform Bill, a rebalance of rights between renters and landlords, we are one step closer to ensuring everyone has a safe and secure home. On #NationalHousingDay, we feel that ending homelessness starts with the priority of providing people with stable housing alongside the support they need to thrive. We also call for supportive and deeply therapeutic housing to help individuals navigate complex challenges, and urge a focus on social and non-market housing to ensure long-term affordability. Keeping people housed means stronger rent protections, affordable housing options, and a commitment to ensuring everyone has a safe place to call home.
