?? Celebrating the great results of the #HIGHFIVE 2nd #OpenCall for #innovation projects! Soon, we will showcase the top funded initiatives, so follow the news ?? For now, let’s explore together the key highlights of this important stage ?? ? With 51 submitted applications from 72 SMEs across 9 different countries, covering 24 NUTS2 regions, this demonstrates the strong interest from #SMEs in tackling issues in the #FoodProcessing industry ?? ? 44 candidates scored 75-85 points and were evaluated as eligible. Great job, everyone! ?? ? 7 projects were granted a total of €540,510 – slightly more than we initially planned for the 2nd open call ??? ? We also applaud the dedication to address not just one, but several or even all the challenges related to food processing which we outlined ?? ? Moreover, the awarded projects are ready to incorporate various advanced technologies, including AI, sensor systems, and predictive algorithms ?? Which countries responded to the call? I’m pleased to share the announcement of the partnership between the University of Oxford and Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford. This collaboration represents a coming together of visionaries, world-class research, and the resources necessary to accelerate and scale innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges in health and medical science, food security and sustainable agriculture, climate change and clean energy, and government innovation. The partnership includes ￡100m into joint research programmes, undergraduate and postgraduate student scholarships, and joint faculty... and this is just the beginning. The ￡1bn EIT Oxford campus comprising research laboratory facilities, supercomputing and a medical clinic will fully open in 2027.

Introducing the #S3EStart Research Projects ???Comprehensive Pathogen Surveillance Ecosystem (CPSE) ???The solution: PathoTrack and AgriSafe are the two solutions developed by CPSE, focused on leveraging the power of AI to enhance pathogen surveillance through next-generation sequencing analysis. Great initiative. Innovation thrives on such collaboration, as it brings together diverse perspectives, expertise, and resources necessary to tackle complex challenges. To drive AI innovation, the UK government should establish ethical guidelines, invest in R&D, nurture AI talent, promote sector-specific adoption, build AI ecosystems, collaborate globally, ensure responsible deployment, and prioritize long-term sustainability to stay competitive on the global stage.

?? Science, Research and Innovation Progress report 2024 released! The European Commission has published the “#Science, #Research and #Innovation Performance of the EU, 2024” report #SRIP2024, which offers a comprehensive and detailed overview of how Europe is performing today in terms of science, research and innovation and analyses the key determinants of this performance. The report builds on a wide range of data sources and provides an extensive coverage of topics, which illustrates the horizontal nature of?research and innovation activities in the EU landscape. This 2024 edition of the SRIP focuses in particular on the vital role of research and innovation in meeting the EU’s climate goals, advancing the circular economy, enhancing competitiveness and supporting the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient society. It examines Europe’s global position and the intensifying competition from other major economies, highlighting also other challenges, such as the under-exploitation of the European innovation ecosystem and the persistent technology gaps compared to other regions. In addition, the report reveals the need to intensify Europe’s efforts to achieve the target of investing 3% of GDP in research and development and to deliver innovative solutions for our socio-economic challenges. The report also emphasises the necessity for complementary action at the EU, national, and regional levels. The #SRIP2024 is a flagship biennial publication by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation that draws on a long tradition of indicators and economic analyses.
