We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Allman for traveling from Winston Salem, NC to present the D.Z. Morgan Lectureship in Geriatrics. We truly appreciate the time, effort, and expertise shared in this important discussion. Dr. Richard Allman obtained his undergrad and MD degrees at West Virginia University (WVU). After completing a residency in internal medicine at WVU, he pursued research training at Johns Hopkins University as a fellow in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Then, he served as a faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for almost 28 years where he served as the director of the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care and the Comprehensive Center for Aging. While at UAB, he was the founding director for the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) hosted by the VA Medical Centers in Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA. His research program was funded by the National Institute on Aging, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the John A. Hartford Foundation and focused on mobility, cardiovascular disease, quality improvement and health disparities. He has more than 220 peer-reviewed publications. After retiring from UAB in 2013, he served for almost 5 years as the leader for policy and planning for Geriatrics and Extended Care in the headquarters of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC. Dr. Allman is credentialed as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and works part-time as an Executive Coach for leaders in healthcare, higher education, not-for-profit and faith-based organizations. He was recognized as the WVU School of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus in 2004. He was awarded the Kent Award and the Freeman Award by the Gerontological Society of America in 2013 in honor of his accomplishments as a leader and as a physician researcher.
