When I used to live in Paris, the climax of my week was spending my Sunday mornings wandering through Place de la République after a previous hardcore night-out. That place always got me feel like if I truly was part of something bigger. In the heart of every thriving city lie its public spaces - parks, plazas, and #streetscapes that serve as communal living rooms. As we navigate the challenges of urban sustainability, these areas become more than mere passageways or leisure spots; they transform into crucial battlegrounds in our quest for a responsible future. Let’s explore how innovative public spaces can spearhead urban sustainability and inclusivity: ??Biodiversity Boosters: Public spaces can be designed as vibrant #ecosystems, supporting local flora and fauna. Incorporating native plants, creating pollinator-friendly gardens, and ensuring habitats for urban #wildlife enhances biodiversity, turning “concrete jungles” into urban “oases.” ??Climate Resilience Hubs: With the right design, these areas can mitigate urban heat island effects, manage stormwater through green infrastructure, and provide shaded sanctuaries, making our cities more #resilient to #climatechange. ??Adaptable Environments: Create flexible public spaces that can host a variety of activities and events, fostering a dynamic #community life that adapts to changing urban needs. ??Community-Driven Spaces: Engage diverse community voices in the #planning process to reflect a broad spectrum of needs and desires, ensuring spaces serve the collective rather than the few. ??Universal Platforms: Inclusive design ensures that public spaces serve all community members, irrespective of age, mobility, or socio-economic status. By prioritizing #accessibility, these spaces can bridge community divides and foster a sense of belonging. As we reimagine our urban landscapes, the transformation of public spaces into sustainable, resilient, and inclusive areas is not just a goal—it's a necessity. What's the worth of a healthy place to live? Your first answer probably wasn't a monetary value. Maybe you thought of a longer life, a better quality of living, or a safe environment for your children. All of these benefits go far beyond an economic bottomline. But for city governments making difficult spending decisions every day, putting numbers on the value of healthy urban design can support bold spending plans. The question is - how can city planners find the value on walkable streets, safe spaces for children to play, or therapeutic green spaces? In collaboration with EIT Urban Mobility, our Healthy Cities. team is helping cities to find the answer with their new planning tool - Healthy Cities Generator €VALUE. An add-on to their established tool for healthy urban planning, HCG€ will help municipalities make more confident investment cases for urban development that favours health and wellbeing. Healthy Cities consultants Amber De La Haye and Ruth Gow were recently invited to present their work on valuing healthy urban spaces at the World Health Organization's annual Healthy Cities Network Conference. ??? “HCG€ will help Europe’s municipalities join up health-based thinking with thoughtful, long-term economic planning to make their cities better places to live.” - Ruth Gow Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dVWGbJ4k
