On this day in history, President Roosevelt signed the GI Bill into law. If you view any American Legion social media platform, you’ll be reminded of this historic day. But in reality, today is bittersweet. Sweet, because it’s a reminder of greatness. It’s a testament to what can happen when a Congressionally Chartered Veteran Service Organization fights for the benefit of its members. It’s a model - a picture - of what to strive for. Bitter, because I question whether The American Legion’s founders would recognize the organization today. From a revered institution, to one that seems to systematically black ball women who stand too tall. From a well oiled grassroots machine, to one that seemingly removes effective voices from leadership, because they speak a little too straight. For those that don’t know the history of the GI Bill, The American Legion fought for it alone, against the other VSOs - DAV and VFW. My fear, today, is that The American Legion may no longer be the #VeteranServiceOrganization best equipped to stand in adversity, on behalf of its members. But, perhaps that fear is good. Perhaps competition will, finally, drive us to change - to working with one another for the betterment of veterans as a whole. My hope for today, as individuals celebrate the passage of the GI Bill, is that we remember what incredible things can be done when we come together as one unified grassroots movement. And regardless of our positions, may we work to ensure we elevate the voices of those less heard. ???? Veterans Day Reflection! ???? “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John Fitzgerald Kennedy 35th U.S. President This Veterans Day, I’m reflecting on the #courage, #leadership, and sacrifices that sustain our #freedom—embodied by my father, who served as a journalist in Germany during World War II, and by countless others who have stood in defense of democracy. Veterans Day is a reminder that our freedoms come at a cost, paid by those who commit their lives to something larger than themselves. We celebrate our Veterans and their families for their quiet acts of service, the resilience to press on in the face of uncertainty, and the unwavering commitment to protect others. Let’s honor our Veterans and their legacy with the 3 #leadership principles: 1. Lead with Service ???? 2. Embrace Resilience ???? 3. Honor Legacy with Integrity ???? Today, let us remember and strive to live in gratitude, upholding the values they defended. Freedom, after all, is a gift we inherit from those who paid the ultimate price. #VeteransDay #Leadership #Gratitude #Legacy #LeadLoudly

Today isn’t about our usual laughs or the daily grind. Veterans Day is a day to step back, remember, and honor those who made the boldest shift of all—the choice to serve, to protect, to sacrifice. We wear the poppy not just as a symbol, but as a promise that we remember and respect their courage. At Bold Shift, we’re all about pushing forward, challenging the norm. Today, let’s do that by asking ourselves: What more can we do for those who’ve given so much? Beyond the poppy, beyond the posts, how can we make a difference for veterans who continue to lead by example? This isn’t just a moment of remembrance; it’s a call to act. Let’s commit to creating inclusive workplaces, stronger support systems, and real opportunities for those who’ve served. Today, we set aside the routine to honor, to thank, and to step up. #VeteransDay #BoldShift #LestWeForget #PoppyOfRemembrance #HonorAndAction #SupportOurVeterans #RealChange #LeadershipInService

Local Hero, National Bravery: The Story of Hiram W. Purcell and the Medal of Honor Growing up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Civil War history wasn't just in textbooks; it was woven into the fabric of our community. Monuments dotted the landscape, silent testaments to the sacrifices made generations before. One name that resonated with me was Hiram W. Purcell, a local boy who earned the highest military honor – the Medal of Honor. Hiram, born in 1837 in Upper Black Eddy, wasn't just a name on a plaque. He was a young man, not much older than I was when I first learned about him, who volunteered with the 104th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. In 1862, at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, Hiram found himself in the midst of a fierce battle. As his regiment retreated, entrusted with carrying the colors, he displayed courage that transcended the chaos. Facing the advancing enemy, a decision had to be made in a split second. Hiram, instead of continuing the retreat, turned back into the fray. His singular focus – to save the other regimental flag from capture. This act of selfless bravery, under heavy fire, stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and his comrades. Hiram's heroism wasn't recognized immediately. It wasn't until 1894, over 30 years later, that he received the Medal of Honor. Though delayed, the recognition solidified his place among the nation's bravest. Hiram W. Purcell's story is a reminder that heroism can emerge from the most ordinary people. It's a call to courage that echoes through the ages, inspiring us to stand tall in the face of adversity. #HiramWPurcell #MedalofHonor #CivilWarHero #BucksCounty #LocalHistory #AmericanValor

Great write-up below from the Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A., Inc. about the history of the American Purple Heart... Did you know that the Purple Heart was originally designated as the Badge of Merit in 1782 and George Washington ??ONLY?? awarded three servicemembers with the honor? It's true - check out the post below to learn more!!
???????????? ?????? ???? ???????????? ?????????? ??????, a special day to honor and remember the brave men and women who were wounded or killed in service to our country. Awarded in the name of the President, the Purple Heart recognizes their sacrifices and valor. Across the nation, states, counties, and cities, along with sports and entertainment entities, pause to honor these heroes. Military and veteran organizations hold remembrance events, and we invite you to join us in paying tribute to those who have received this esteemed honor. ?? ?????????????? ???? ???????????? ?????????? ?????? ?? The Purple Heart, originally designated as the Badge of Merit, was first awarded by George Washington in 1782 to recognize enlisted soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action.” Although only three were initially awarded by Washington himself, the Badge of Merit laid the groundwork for today’s Purple Heart. Revived in 1932, the Purple Heart was expanded to honor those wounded in combat. By 1944, its purpose was refined to specifically recognize those who have been wounded or killed in action. The first modern Purple Heart was awarded to General Douglas MacArthur for his service during World War II. Since then, 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded. ?? Purple Heart Day, first observed in 2014, gives us all a chance to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of our service members, ensuring their courage is never forgotten. Join us in honoring their legacy. #MilitaryOrderOfThePurpleHeart #MOPH #PurpleHeartDay #HonorAndRemember #VeteranSacrifice #MilitaryHistory #AmericanHeroes #ServiceAndSacrifice #Veterans

It’s disappointing to see companies, especially those who pride themselves on supporting veterans, not honor Veteran's Day, with a day off. Veterans have made sacrifices many of us can’t fully comprehend, and offering them a day to pause, reflect, and feel valued is a meaningful gesture of respect. Observing Veterans Day as a holiday isn’t just an added benefit; it’s an acknowledgment of the unique contributions veterans bring to our workplaces and communities. For companies that hire and support veterans, taking this day to honor them shows a true commitment to the values they stand for. Let’s remember the importance of honoring those who have served us. ?#VeteransDay #HonorOurVeterans #SupportOurVeterans #RespectAndRecognition #VeteranSupport #CorporateResponsibility #EmployeeWellbeing #HonorAndRespect #ThankYouVeterans #InclusiveWorkplace #VeteranAppreciation #WalkTheTalk #ValuesInAction #CorporateCulture #Leadership

Did You Know? Bob Ross Was More Than an Artist – He Was a Veteran Many of us know Bob Ross as the calm, encouraging painter who made “happy little trees” a beloved phrase. But before his career as the host of The Joy of Painting, he served in the U.S. Air Force, enlisting at just 18 and rising to the rank of sergeant. He retired in 1981 after 20 years of dedicated service. Stories like Bob Ross’s remind us that veterans have powerful, multifaceted journeys that extend beyond their service. And it’s those stories, their impact, and their resilience that I’m passionate about highlighting. As a veteran myself and the Founder and CEO of VetMentorAI, I know firsthand the strength it takes to transition from military life to civilian success. That’s why I’m excited to share that I’ll be shifting more of my content to focus on veteran stories, support, and the impact we can all make together. From success stories to insights about navigating challenges, this space will become a hub for celebrating and empowering those who’ve served. My goal? To create a space that uplifts, informs, and connects veterans, as well as those who wish to support them. Because veterans are more than their service—they are creators, leaders, innovators, and change-makers. Stay tuned as we spotlight more veterans, share resources, and inspire one another to push forward and thrive. #VeteranSpotlight #MilitaryHeroes #VeteranStories #Empowerment #Leadership #VetMentorAI
