The Kansas African Studies Center will offer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships of $8500 ($3500 stipend and $5000 tuition) for students who plan to enroll in the University of Kansas 2025 Virtual Summer African Languages Institute (SALI) for courses in Arabic, Kiswahili, Wolof, or?Yorùbá. The KU SALI provides an entire academic year of language instruction in an intensive, 8-week program during June and July. Details about the FLAS fellowships, including eligibility and the application process, are available here: https://flas.ku.edu/. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the USA; otherwise, the virtual character of courses means that people can take the courses from anywhere with sufficient internet connectivity. The deadline for applications is February 7.

Are We Doing Enough to Save Foreign Language Education in Higher Ed? Fresh from the Bi-Regional NAFSA I & II Conference in Vancouver, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much potential we’re missing in higher ed when departments don’t collaborate. During a conversation with Amanda Lanier, we explored how bridging silos—like connecting Global Engagement, Education Abroad, ISSS, and even foreign language departments—could create transformational change. Yet, foreign language departments seem noticeably absent from NAFSA discussions. Coupled with the lack of K-12 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs in the U.S., it’s no surprise that fewer American students are studying foreign languages in university. This disconnection is reflected in alarming trends: ?? West Virginia University recently eliminated its entire World Languages Department. ?? The Department of Defense drastically reduced funding for language flagship programs, and that includes $20,000 for each recipient to study abroad.* How can global engagement offices, educators, and policymakers start working together so that these gaps don't widen, jeopardizing cultural literacy and global preparedness? How can we bring more voices into the conversation and build the cross-departmental collaboration we need? ?? What are some of the challenges faced by English Medium Education students in francophone regions? Our research aims to answer this question by investigating the experiences of multilingual francophone children in Cameroon, exploring their learning resources and strategies. I am excited to share the article, titled?"The social and linguistic integration experiences of Ukrainian refugees through community and urban education courses in Iceland"?in?Social Sciences & Humanities Open.? This article was written in collaboration with my colleague and friend, Dr. Vander Tavares. We explored Ukrainian refugees’ perspectives on and experiences with courses aimed at developing L2 skills and facilitating social integration in Iceland.?Our guiding research questions for this study were: How can community and urban education courses, designed through experiential education, support the cultural and social integration of Ukrainian refugees into Icelandic society?? What role does experiential education play in L2 skills development for Ukrainian refugees in Iceland?? The article is published open access. The Commission had a productive meeting with the President of Universities Canada, Gabriel Miller, to discuss the importance of Indigenous languages. Commissioner Ignace shared his personal story, and highlighted the gaps in resources, training, and supports for Indigenous language immersion teachers. There was an emphasis on a shared commitment to supporting language learning. Looking forward to continued collaboration!
