He challenged us to rethink resilience—not just as a way to help people recover from shocks like climate change but as a pathway to help communities flourish. After a 5-year hiatus, The World Bank Land Conference held last month in Washington D.C. brought together over 1,000 development practitioners, donors, civil society advocates and government officials. Ushahidi’s Angela Oduor Lungati and Declan Ottaro are at the United Nations General Assembly this week, where they had the opportunity to reconnect with Lance Pierce, CEO of NetHope. Since joining NetHope, Ushahidi has become part of a dynamic global consortium of over 60 nonprofits and 70 technology partners, opening doors for impactful collaborations in humanitarian relief, long-term development, and ecosystem conservation. Together, we launched the Climate Equity Project in Uganda’s Yumbe District, focusing on climate adaptation and resilience. With escalating environmental challenges disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, climate action is essential. By empowering local communities with real-time data, we aim to address issues like drought and resource scarcity effectively. Community inclusion is vital; disenfranchised communities, often most impacted by climate change, bring invaluable local knowledge to the table. We've engaged government officials, community leaders, and groups like YUGNET (Yumbe GBV Reduction Network) to strengthen coordination and elevate grassroots voices. Our discussions and training programs for data champions have fostered collaboration and informed policies that reflect community needs. With strong local support and diverse group involvement, we are making significant progress towards a resilient future for Yumbe, creating a framework that uplifts marginalized communities and protects the environment. In 2021, the Global Center on Adaptation partnered with African leaders to launch the world’s largest adaptation program, integrating adaptation solutions into over $12 billion in development investments. Now, we’re collaborating with PM Mia Amor Mottley and SIDS leaders to bring a similar initiative to small island states. As we move into this next phase, we want the health sector to be front-and-center of our AAAP 2.0 program. Hot off the press! Check out our latest piece in Nature Communications (Springer Nature) exploring design innovations to enhance cost-effectiveness in Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) programmes to avoid deforestation. Our field experiment in Selva Lacandona (Chiapas, Mexico) shows that requiring participants to enrol all their forest lands quadruples cost-effectiveness compared to the traditional PES contract where participants can enrol only parcels they planned to conserve anyway while leaving aside other parcels to deforest. Our findings highlight how simple contract changes can make PES much more impactful, helping limited public budgets achieve more. In my day-to-day work we are often exploring how to improve policy design. Research like this is key to have solid evidence on what we can do to achieve greater positive impact for biodiversity and local communities with government budgets.

I’m thrilled to share the launch of 'BEYOND DROUGHT: A Systems Thinking Approach to Drought Resilience in the Horn of Africa' ?? Drought and food insecurity remain among the most pressing challenges facing humanity. Between 2020 and 2023, the Horn of Africa endured its most severe drought in 40 years, pushing communities to the brink of famine. This report emerges from a series of expert roundtables that brought together over 40 practitioners to: ?? Apply a systems lens to examine the drivers and complexities of drought and food insecurity. ?? Identify hidden opportunities to enhance resilience. ?? Leverage foresight to imagine and co-create pathways for a future where drought no longer leads to crisis. The insights presented serve as a springboard for discussion, innovation, and collective action, aimed at transforming systems to create lasting solutions. ??
