Join us this Black History Month as we celebrate Black excellence! Thompson Coburn is pleased to spotlight the achievements and contributions of trailblazing Black attorneys and professional staff.
Today's Q&A spotlights Dremain Moore, a Chicago associate in the business litigation group. Drew represents clients in litigation matters involving products liability, breach of contract, trademark infringement, and insurance coverage claims.
Q: What advice would you give to those who are just joining our firm as they look to advance their careers?
A: The legal industry and law firms continue to work on making the attorney career path more accessible to attorneys from diverse or nontraditional backgrounds. But while the industry plays catch-up, there is nothing preventing you from building your network of mentors and role models who can help you get to the next level. A mentor can give you a benchmark to plot your course on mastering your craft, developing your client base, and keeping perspective so as to build your maturity and your fulfillment in your practice. TC has a particularly strong focus on mentorship, where we match new and incoming attorneys with multiple mentors who assist with the transition into practice and into our firm. If your firm does not have an equivalent program, do not be afraid to reach out to your local bar association program or directly to an attorney you admire on your own.
Q: How have your background and influences brought you to this position?
A: I started my career in Black Entertainment Television’s legal department, researching IP rights and negotiating license agreements and contracts. I have grown to more fully appreciate how my colleagues - from the head of our department to my immediate supervisor and more senior colleagues – served as formal and informal mentors, providing numerous professional development opportunities and role models. I also played rugby during my time as an undergraduate at George Washington University (Wingman, #11, to be precise), where I learned the value of teamwork and healthy competition. Now, as a business litigator, I have increasingly found that success depends on being passionate about getting the job done right, treating colleagues and opponents with respect, and taking ownership.
