Guha PLLC joins the nation in observing Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 when news of freedom and liberation finally reached Galveston, Texas more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today serves as both celebration of the country's progress toward racial equality and justice, and reflection of the work that remains to be done.

Sixty years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law a cornerstone of civil rights legislation in history– the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Prior to this, the United States had been operating under Jim Crow -- state and local laws that legalized racial segregation – to marginalize African Americans by denying them the right to vote, hold jobs, become educated, live in certain neighborhoods, use public facilities like buses, bathrooms, restaurants, pools and water fountains, etc. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the beginning of formal and legalized equity and access for not only African Americans, but for racial and ethnic minorities, women and those with diverse religious beliefs.? From toddlers in our Early Head Start and Head Start programs to our Foster Grandparents and everything in between, ABCD is Greater Boston and the Mystic Valley’s path to equity and access! While many gains created through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are being challenged and ripped away, ABCD stands behind the belief in equity, opportunity and access for all. #civilrights #equity

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law 60 years ago today, but Black Americans still trail White Americans in economic and social equality, National Urban League says. The League’s 2024 Equality Index, which measures social and economic status of African Americans relative to Whites, is at 75.7. At full equality, the index would be 100. There is no question the Civil Rights Act has brought progress, but economic empowerment is key to parity. The National Urban League’s 2024 State of Black America is an insightful report that analyzes the Civil Rights Act’s impact on Black America. https://bit.ly/3W2QMX9 #civilrightsact #civilrights #democracy #equality

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, honoring freedom and resilience. Let's reflect on the significance of this day and continue working towards equality and justice for all. Together, we build a better future. ?????? #Juneteenth #Equality #HealthcareInnovation #TeamJTG ???The history: Juneteenth?commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger shared General Order No. 3, marking freedom for enslaved people in Texas — 2.5 years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had little effect due to the Civil War. ???The recognition: Juneteenth — from "June" and "nineteenth" — has a historic legacy that’s long been celebrated in the African-American community. But it wasn’t until the summer of 2020, when protests flared over the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, that a fight to make June 19 a holiday was revived. On June 17, 2021, Congress passed a bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, and President Joe Biden signed it into law. Today, Juneteenth symbolizes a commitment to reckon with the past and work toward an inclusive future — with difficult conversations and the fight for equality and justice. “Absolute equality is not about equal results, but about creating a society that supports all to become their very best selves to benefit a collective community." -Sam Collins III, Juneteenth Legacy Project Co-Chair On June 19, 1865 - a full two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation - Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” Since 1866, Black communities, first in Texas and then across the United States, gathered to mark the day that became known as Juneteenth. When Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, the Nia Cultural Center & Juneteenth Legacy Project unveiled a 5,000-square-foot public art mural called, "Absolute Equality." It overlooks the site where Granger issued General Order No. 3. Reginald Adams was the lead artist. The Reconstruction era was a critical period in American history where millions of Black people sought their rightful place as equal citizens under the law. I highly recommend using the National Park Service's Reconstruction Era National Historic Network to learn more. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a landmark piece of legislation in the United States that aimed to address racial discrimination and segregation. Signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, the act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in public accommodations, employment, and federally funded programs. The act effectively dismantled Jim Crow segregation laws that had enforced racial segregation and discrimination in public facilities, such as schools, restaurants, and hotels. It also empowered the federal government to enforce desegregation and take legal action against discriminatory practices. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a significant victory for the Civil Rights Movement and marked a turning point in the fight for racial equality in America. Its passage paved the way for subsequent civil rights legislation, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Joy Trip Project celebrates the enduring legacy of Black American History. The Unhidden Minute is part of the Unhidden Podcast Project supported through a National Geographic Explorer Grant from the National Geographic Society, with the cooperation of the National Park Service. This series elevates the untold stories of Black American historical figures, events and cultural contributions. #unhiddenblackhistory #NationalParkService #yourparkstory #NationalGeographic #unhiddenminute

A pivotal moment in Reconstruction: Mississippi rejoins the Union (1870) On this day in 1870, Mississippi became the 9th state readmitted to the Union following the Civil War. This marked a significant step towards national reconciliation, but came with a crucial condition: the state constitution could never be altered to disenfranchise African Americans. While this decision represented progress, it also highlighted the ongoing struggle for racial equality in the United States. As we reflect on this historical event, it's vital to acknowledge the complexities of Reconstruction and its lasting impact on American society. #blackhistorymonth #bcvoices #standupspeakout
