The publication of this article, based on the results of my thesis, gives me the opportunity to discuss the role of small islands and islets in the western Mediterranean in the conservation of biodiversity. Drawing on the work of Bruno Latour, I show how difficult it is for these territories to be "good laboratories", whereas they are formidable "key sensors" for the conservation of biodiversity in this Mediterranean hotspot. With Australian woodland bird species facing alarming declines, Charles Sturt's Gulbali Institute is training AI to enhance tracking and conservation efforts. The BirdNET model will identify thousands of bird calls in minutes, supporting fast and accurate detection and effective protection strategies. “When you’re in the conservation technology space, it’s amazing to see these big jumps and breakthroughs where the floodgates open and innovation follows,” observed David M. Watson. Co-led by University of New England (AU) in collaboration with QUT (Queensland University of Technology), The University of Queensland, NRM South and Bush Heritage Australia, the project is funded through the Australian Government Innovative Biodiversity Monitoring scheme. DNA barcoding is a method of specimen identification using short, standardized segments of DNA. Every species has its own barcode, just as every person has their own fingerprint. These DNA barcodes can be compared to a reference library to provide an ID. DNA barcoding is used for more than just research – it can also help address problems with broad impacts on all areas in which society interacts with biodiversity. Some practical applications include pest and disease control, food production and safety, resource management, biodiversity conservation, and education. ??????

? Thank you, Dave, for another enlightening lecture on the complexities calculating Biodiversity Net Gain for land developments and its application in field examples. In this past lecture, the need for more ecologists especially trained to undertake and evaluate these calculations was highlighted. It is imperative to attract and recruit more ecologists across the country for accurate and ecologically valid assessments of the BNGs submitted by developers, to preserve and or restore local habitats. This is a field that will hopefully bring more actions to protect the UK's varied habitats and their individual species for future generations.
