“There is no military solution to this conflict” is probably one of the most recognized lessons-turned-dicta in Middle East politics. And this is for good reason. Most conflicts in the region have roots that have little to do with security, and yet they are often dealt with exclusively through military and security means. However, this approach wrongly focuses on symptoms and not the cause. A military approach to perceived security threats across the region has been necessary to neutralize immediate dangers, but it has failed to deliver lasting stability. To dispute this claim would betray any honest reading of political history in the Middle East. Check out our latest guest contribution by Bilal Y. Saab here: https://lnkd.in/dHkKiyZP

'In the Red Sea, no one wanted to appear to be part of a maritime coalition that was seen to be defending Israel. Last night, countries shot down incoming projectiles because it can be portrayed as defending sovereign airspace and not wanting a regional war. '...?the coordinated military operations that protected Israel from mass casualties and destruction highlight the durability of the?Jordan-Israel?and?Egypt-Israel?peace treaties as well as the 2020 normalization agreements. '... the security dialogues that have been underway between these countries [certain Arab countries and Israel] for years paid off on April 13. '... what everyone already knows about the [Abraham] accords and why supporters of the Palestinians are so angry about it: The Arab leaders who have normalized ties with Israel place more value on fending off the Iranian challenge than Palestinian statehood. '... the very fact that the Saudis still want to move forward with the Israelis says a lot about where the Palestinian issue stands among Arab leaders’ priorities. '... last weekend’s coordinated effort to prevent a wider and more destructive regional war (and, yes, defend Israel) was the result of Washington’s leadership. ?The episode demonstrates that when American policymakers focus on preventing threats to regional stability and security—as opposed to leveraging the power at their disposal to remake societies—Washington can be successful. 'Regional governments still hate and fear Iran, harbor no particular commitment to Palestinian justice, want good relations with Israel, and desire American leadership'. https://archive.md/uhfm1

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been relocated to a secure site within the country as tensions escalate following Israel's announcement that it killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a Beirut airstrike. This move comes amid heightened security measures and ongoing communication between Iranian officials and regional proxy groups, including Hezbollah, to evaluate the situation and plan their next actions. Nasrallah's potential death represents a significant loss for both Hezbollah and Iranian influence in the region, raising fears of retaliatory strikes. The unfolding events could dramatically alter the dynamics of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's recent declaration regarding the missile attack on Israel marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict, as it not only legitimizes Iran's military actions but also serves to galvanize support among its allies. By framing the attack as a justified response to Israel's aggression, particularly in light of the killing of Hezbollah's leader, Khamenei is tapping into deep-seated grievances that resonate within the region. This rhetoric underscores the precarious nature of regional stability, where each military action is met with an equally forceful response, perpetuating a cycle of violence that threatens to escalate further. As tensions rise, particularly with Israel's ongoing operations in southern Lebanon, the potential for broader conflict looms large. Khamenei's statements reflect not only the complexities of Middle Eastern geopolitics but also the challenges of achieving lasting peace in a landscape marked by deep divisions and historical animosities. https://lnkd.in/gQbczhH7

Unyielding Commitment: The IDF's Determined Stand Against Existential Threats - Faced with a genocidal enemy whose primary objective is the complete annihilation of Israel, the notion of compromise is not only futile but perilous. In this context, the decision to assassinate Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah represents a significant and transformative shift in Israel's military strategy. As articulated by Lee Smith in "Killing Nasrallah" (Tablet Magazine, September 28, 2024), this decisive action not only eliminated a long-standing and formidable adversary but also underscored Israel's resolute determination to prioritize its national security over the influence of its superpower ally. Netanyahu's stark realization that "heeding Washington’s advice on the conduct of war is like taking counsel from the angel of death" reflects a profound commitment to safeguarding Israel's interests, even in the face of external pressures and potential diplomatic fallout. This shift in strategy signifies a new era in which Israel is prepared to act decisively against those who threaten its existence, asserting its sovereignty and demonstrating that its security cannot be compromised by political considerations. This resolute stance sends a powerful message to both allies and adversaries: Israel will take whatever measures are necessary to defend itself against those who seek its destruction.... #IDF #Israel #Hezbollah #NationalSecurity #MiddleEast #MilitaryStrategy #StandWithIsrael #Victory #Deterrence #YonosonRosenblum

‘Hamas counting on victory through Biden,’ warns former intelligence official 6 months into the war, Hamas’s fanatical goals of emerging as the ultimate victor remain in place “As long as they (Hamas) are not decisively defeated, they have a chance to stay alive in Gaza. Therefore, they positively view the outcomes of the war, or at least they have some kind of optimism,” said Brig. Gen. (res.) Yossi Kuperwasser, former head of the Research and Assessment Division of Israel’s Military Intelligence & director of the Project on Regional Affairs at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. “Right now, there’s a chance [Hamas] will achieve their desired goals, from their perspective, and also strengthen their position within the Palestinian system, while receiving the commitment of support from the Iranian axis, & the Muslim Brotherhood axis towards them,” he said. “See, for example, the Turkish economic step against Israel. Hamas might be able to stay in power & believe this is possible. But there’s also concern within Hamas that this will not happen, and that Israel, in the end, will enter Rafah and complete the takeover of all of Gaza. This concern still exists. Therefore, I do not propose anyone begins summing up the war just because six months have passed,” he cautioned. What is beyond debate, however, is that Hamas’s entire strategy today boils down to a global pressure campaign to force Israel to stop the war before Hamas collapses in Gaza. “The whole campaign for them, the way to win the campaign, is through [U.S. President Joe] Biden,” he said. “Everything they do is to exert pressure on Biden, so he pressures Israel so that Israel stops before it collapses Hamas in Gaza. That’s the whole idea.” Hamas’s “use of Israeli hostages, the manipulation of the suffering of the Palestinian civilians in Gaza, the activities of their allies, both within the Palestinian system and outside it,” are all directed toward this end, he said. “Also, all the protests around the world, all the political pressures—this is seen positively by Hamas. As well as the activities of the [American] Democrats and other actors in the West against Israel, all of the pressure on Israel,” he added. “It’s still not enough to say that the goal was achieved, but there are certainly some achievements on the way to this goal, and they see very positively the American pressure on Israel.” Michael Barak, a senior researcher and head of the Global Jihad Research at the International Institute for Counter Terrorism (ICT) and a lecturer at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at Reichman University, Herzliya, said that while Hamas’s plan to spark a widespread wave of violence in Judea and Samaria in Ramadan failed, Hamas has longer-term goals. The Geneva Conventions are one of humanity's most important accomplishments of the last century. In 1949, in the aftermath of World War II, the Conventions were universally agreed upon by countries to reflect universal morals and ethical behaviour. Four conventions and their additional protocols aim to protect those wounded or no longer fighting, prisoners of war and civilians.? - The First Geneva Convention protects wounded and sick soldiers on land during war? - The Second Geneva Convention protects wounded, sick and shipwrecked military personnel at sea during the war - The Third Geneva Convention applies to prisoners of war - The Fourth Geneva Convention protects civilians, including those in occupied territory.? In the two decades that followed the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, the world witnessed an increase in the number of non-international armed conflicts and wars of national liberation.?? In response, two Protocols Additional to the four 1949 Geneva Conventions were adopted in 1977. They strengthen the protection of victims of international (Protocol I) and non-international (Protocol II) armed conflicts and limit how wars are fought. Protocol II was the first-ever international treaty devoted exclusively to situations of non-international armed conflicts. In 2005, a third Additional Protocol was adopted creating an additional emblem, the Red Crystal, which has the same international status as the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems. Israel Defends Itself—and May Save Western Civilization Powerful insights from Gerard Baker in The Wall Street Journal As we approach the one-year mark since the tragic events of October 7th, a ground war in Lebanon and a terrorist mass shooting in Jaffa Israel, Gerard Baker delivers a compelling reminder of how Israel’s resilience and tactical brilliance have reshaped the global security landscape. From dismantling terrorist networks to standing firm against the theocratic regime in Iran, Israel has become a beacon of courage and determination. In his must-read article, Baker emphasizes that Israel’s fight is not just about its own survival—it’s about defending the values we all hold dear: freedom, democracy, and the very fabric of Western civilization. Baker revisits Churchill’s quote, stating: “Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few.” Now is the time to not only express our gratitude but also take action. How can we support Israel in this shared struggle for a more secure world? Read Baker’s powerful analysis and let’s amplify this important message. #WesternCivilization #GlobalSecurity #GerardBaker #IsraelDefense #WSJ #Leadership #ThankYouIsrael https://lnkd.in/gCUC_PG3

The War in Ukraine - the solutions for peace and stability in the region: The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb presented four conditions of a "Peace Plan" during an interview which Fox News. Long-lasting peace in Ukraine and in the world is possible only if the following four conditions are met: 1. Territory. All territories along the 1991 border should be returned to Ukraine. If not, it's only a matter of time before the new war breaks up again in the future. 2. Security guarantees. Ukraine should be included in NATO or be given similar concrete security guarantees. If not, it's only a matter of time before the war flares up again. 3. Punishment. Those responsible for the “special military operation” must be punished. And not only the master of the Kremlin, but all who was involved. If not, it's only a matter of time until other criminals see that crimes are not punished and they can do whatever they want. 4. Reparations. Full compensation for material, human, and other losses. If not, it’s only a matter of time until both the Kremlin czars and their international counterparts attack their neighbors.
Finally, somebody with the brain and the balls to tell the truth! Recently, the President of Finland Alexander Stubb presented four conditions of a "Peace Plan" during an interview which Fox News. Alexander Stubb emphasized that this logic should work not because someone “cares for Ukraine.” Not for ethical reasons. But simple pragmatic reasons. If these 4 conditions are not met, it is only a matter of time until new "special military operations" take place all over the world. It is cheaper and more reliable to ensure that these 4 conditions are fulfilled now, than to have multiple wars emerge in the years to come.
