I chatted with VC general partners recently, and they shared something obvious but still very important for startup founders that is often missed. To succeed, you need three critical roles among the founders: Sales, Product, and Engineer. ? Sales is the person who gets customers and drives revenue. ? Product is the visionary who shapes the product and keeps it on track with customers' real needs. ? Engineer is the one who builds the product and makes it work. Having these three roles covered is crucial! It balances the team and covers all the bases. ?? If you're starting something new, ensure these roles are in place. If you describe yourself as a dealmaker on your social media and promise startups the world, then you must actually have to make deals. It’s in your job title. Too often, we see self-proclaimed dealmakers with bulging contact lists and investor connections trying to lure unsuspecting founders into hiring them for what essentially amounts to a glorified outreach campaign. Some takeaways from last night's Primary Venture Partners event in NYC: - New York is home to 140!! private unicorns (that's a big number, especially after the past year of valuation declines) - Private market valuations are starting to improve again - tech company layoffs are down substantively - @Ben Sun AI will bring about the most transformative productivity shift in our lifetime (keep in mind that the Internet became a thing during our lifetime and I'm sure we all thought that was profound!) - even the largest publicly held companies are seeing revenue growth accelerate due to AI - Rule of 40 was the rule but now being modified. More emphasis on growth - but, importantly, *efficient* growth. Shane Sandoval suggested focusing on Gross Dollar Efficiency - for every dollar that you put into your business, how many dollars come out (seems logical but not many founders have had to think this way... but now they do!) - Focus on ARR per employee - Cassie Young shared her pro tips on improving margins at all stages of the GTM funnel (growth/retention/unit economics/efficiency) AI is already being used in traditional film production... and it's incredible what's already possible. One of the key elements to push through the challenges of start-up life ?? super happy to have all of you @Ward Ripmeester @Manish Katoch Side fact: Sometimes people ask me: "Does a start-up really need a CFO?- especially in the earlier stages?" The answer to this questions strongly depends on your personal definition of the CFO role. To me, the role is not limited to finance. Especially in a scaling company, there are also many challenges "behind the lines". As CFO, I see myself as enabler for the business providing everything that is required to scale and being as efficient as possible. This includes availability of data (not only financial) for driving educated decisions, automation and standartization of processes to enable scalability and of course smoothly working supporting functions like HR, IT and Legal.

I ran into a weird business challenge today. I've had 50 experts apply to be part of the MVP rollout of Jaw House (thanks so much to every one of you; it's so lovely) and have room for about 20 to start, mostly because like a lot of MVPs it's pretty manual. As I'm culling through the list to find the right blend of talent so clients have a) choice and b) an expert for anything they need, I see one glaring weakness. There's a big lack of racial diversity. How can Jaw House fully provide expertise for diverse startups, SMBs, and business leaders if the roster of experts isn't equally as diverse? Is this a symptom of the ongoing challenge of lack of diversity in senior roles, thereby limiting the talent pool of diverse fractional experts? Do I have an inherent bias that leads me to whiter spaces / network on the internet? I'm not sure yet. There is a <very> strong list of initial experts for the roll out, and I am super excited to launch later this week. I fully believe everyone on the platform has the wisdom and insight to solve challenges far outside of their own lived experience. But adding more diversity is top of my list. Do you think expert diversity is a challenge I need to meet at Jaw House? If so, how would you approach solving it?
