UK GOVERNMENT TO REDUCE CULTIVATED MEAT APPROVAL TIME TO ~6 MONTHS? The UK government is making strides toward modernizing food regulations with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) announcing plans to streamline the approval process for products like cultivated meat and precision-fermented foods. By creating a new public register for regulated products, the FSA aims to reduce the approval timeline by up to six months, ensuring faster market access without compromising safety standards. This change is set to benefit a range of food sectors, including alt proteins. While the The Good Food Institute Europe welcomes these reforms, it emphasizes the need for more ambitious steps to keep the UK at the forefront of alternative protein innovation. The Good Food Institute Europe has called for enhanced collaboration with international regulators and the creation of a "regulatory sandbox" for cultivated meat to fast-track safety testing. These changes could help drive the UK’s green economy and boost food security for the future. Read more below from The Cell Base, Phoebe Fraser: https://lnkd.in/dQNaTyht

Breaking news in the Food Industry!! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have jointly issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather public feedback on food date labeling terms such as "Sell By," "Use By," and "Best By." The goal is to better understand industry practices, consumer perceptions, and how date labeling affects food waste and household costs. This effort aligns with the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, which aims to halve food waste by 2030. Misunderstandings around date labeling are believed to account for roughly 20% of household food waste. Insights from this initiative could shape future policies, guidelines, or educational campaigns to minimize the premature discarding of safe, edible food. Good Distribution Practice (GDP) Good distribution practice (GDP) is a set of guidelines that helps ensure that products are consistently produced and controlled to the quality standards appropriate for their intended use. GDP can be used in the food industry as well and covers everything from warehouse management to transportation to customer delivery. By following GDP guidelines, food producers can help ensure that their products are safe and high quality. Warehouse Management Warehouses must be organized in a way that enables easy access to products with the closest expiration. This requires proper rotation, which involves moving products that are closest to their expiry date to the front of the shelf, and newer products to the back. This practice helps ensure that products are sold before they expire, reducing waste and improving food safety.
