Anyone can do it with the right strategy and dedication. Our strategy is as follows: 1. Day 1 of flower Install 3 Level of trellis. It is important to add this trellis to support the bottom branches with heavy flowers. 2. Day 7 of flower, remove just the lower few leafs and any small fickle branches exposing an easy view to your drippers. 3. Day 14 of flower Bump EC by .5 (if needed) before installing lights and turning on Undercanopy lights. Start lowering again at day 41 after the second Deleaf. 4. Day 16 of flower Install and turn on Undercanopy lights so you are minimizing sprays and power consumption. 5. Day 19-21 of flower do a very light cleanup if necessary at the base of the plant exposing 6-10" above medium . Remove all large stem leafs and medium fan leafs. This should be 60-65% of the leafs on the plant. Do not pluck but remove the entire leaf and stem. 6. Day 41 of flower big leaf canopy just looking to remove all big fan leafs up the plant and have better airflow. 7. Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is a highly desirable lawn alternative due to its turf-like appearance and habit, as well as its ability to thrive in dry soils and partial shade. It is also notably difficult to propagate from seed—or at least, it used to be! In 2017, Nasami Farm staff began a series of multi-year trials designed to create the first-ever nursery seed production protocols for this species. We found the highest germination rates (68-72%) in seeds that underwent a 12-week warm period prior to being sown. This is called stratification, a propagation process that simulates natural conditions. And among the warm-stratified seeds, seeds that were sown with a light cover of growing medium had better germination rates than seeds sown on the soil surface. This experimental research has meant that since 2021, we have been able to increase our production of C. pensylvanica from 10% seed grown to 100% seed grown, and we now produce, efficiently and sustainably, six times more C. pensylvanica plants annually! NOW is the time to browse seed catalogs and dream of Spring. ? Here are some tips for success from one of the Plant Propagation Handbooks produced by the GCA’s Horticulture Committee: ? 1. ? ? Once the seed packets arrive, be patient. Don’t start too early. Check the number of days to germination, the number of weeks before planting, and the “last frost date” for your area, then count backwards. (Some seeds like those from the seedpod pictured, should be also stored in the fridge for 2-6 weeks to ensure germination.) 2. ? ? Water your containers of soilless mix early, to allow the mix to become thoroughly moist. 3. ? ? Sow seeds according to instructions on the packet and tent the container with plastic about 4-6” above the surface to keep the humidity around 90%. 4. ? ? Keep soil temperatures between 70° and 75°. 5. ? ? For the first week after sowing, spritz heavily at soil level if the top 1/2" is dry. 6. ? ? After germination, allow the mix to dry a little between waterings to encourage roots to grow down into the container. 7. ? ? Seedlings are ready to transplant after the second set of leaves develop.
