Food Lion is deploying “Grab & Go” Food Lockers in rural markets. Unlike Ziscuit that deploys these lockers in public places, Food Lion deploys their lockers in their stores (like Morrisons in the UK). The drawback to this approach is that in-store deployments compete for resources with traditional store operations. Food Lion, Ziscuit can solve this problem. If my 23 yr old self could see me now she wouldn’t believe it! Brand new stepping into her first startup, the world was overwhelming and exciting, it held endless potential. The founders, execs and investors all seemed like titans that knew exactly what to do! I now know that while no one knew exactly what to do they did have a method, a strategy and they worked harddd. I was lucky enough to have had some strong mentors and soon developed my own sense of what it took to be successful in an early stage startup. How to look out for these companies to join or now how to know which to invest in. The first thing that is important is the team. Anything is possible if the team is right. How do you know if the team is right? Well its about knowing them.. What makes them tick, what are their skills, how passionate they are and do you believe in them? Second is the product.. Is there a need for it? Is it good? Will people want it? Third is market.. What is the potential today and what is the future size of the market? How much of a share of it do I think the company can get? Lastly .. what would the exit strategy be and rough estimation of what that can look like in terms of time and $ After following Ali Bonar on Instagram I knew that she and her team fit all the criteria above. I had been a follower for years, they were the real deal! They make an allergen free Granola Butter, this product already had a strong following that was only continuing to grow. When they announced they were seeking an angel round, I jumped at the chance! Fast forward to today. Ali Bonar is an EY Enterpernuer of the year finalist and Oat Haus has announced a nationwide presence in both Target & Whole Foods just to to name a few! I am very proud to announce that my first toe in the water of angel investing is with the team at Oat Haus ! I am proud of the Oat Haus team. And my 23 yr old self is proud of present day me who has worked hard enough to be in a position to support a growing brand. I have become the same type of investor I used to look up to and aspire to be! And the feeling is phenomenal.

But this feeling hits differently! Since 2016, it's been about taking small steps every week, month, and year. Slowly, the voice of the smallholder farmer and brand builder is emerging. When I'm at an event like we were at Ocado Retail or standing in front of someone at Waitrose & Partners or Co-op and they pick up a Blue Turaco Coffee bag or cup to try at any sampling event —it hits differently. You may ask, but why? Because most of those bags or cups are filled with BLUE TURACO COFFEE I've personally picked, and all of them are processed by my team and me. This is not normal in coffee world but we are making it normal. Now, being there to serve that coffee directly to customers? That feeling is something special. It hits differently. It doesn’t get more direct trade than that. Yet, we’re only at the start of a huge adventure. The real work is just beginning. I had a great time attending Food Foundry's 6th annual demo day during Chicago's 'Future-of-Food' Conference this past week. Food Foundry is a Chicago-based startup accelerator program by Relish Works, in partnership with Gordon Food Service. ??? ?You should share more about your StartUp journey and your wine insights“ We’ve been thinking a lot lately about sharing more about our journey—how we’re building the BELMILAN brand and the wine knowledge we're gaining along the way. After talking with friends and being unsure whether people would be interested, we got some surprising feedback: ?? More people are curious about this journey than we initially thought! ?? Some of our initial doubts were: ?? Does anyone really care about two young people starting a project? ?? Will we end up sharing things people already know? ?? What can we even talk about? ?? But our conversations revealed some great points: ?? There’s always something to share when building a startup. ?? Many brands wait until they’re successful to start documenting, but the process itself is often more interesting. ?? It’s important to show the journey, even if it fails—there’s always something to learn. ?? Maybe we can even inspire others to follow their own projects!
