The recent figures that have come out showing how prominent the gender pay gap still is - is a reminder that we still have a long way to go. Sahil Adeem's and Khalil ur Rehman Qamar's daughters wear not-so-quite modest clothes, they should look at their own daughters before policing others. Isn’t this a good rebuttal? Not quite. Let’s talk about why sharing pictures of Sahil Adeem and Khalil ur Rehman Qamar’s daughters to counter their misogynistic comments about modest clothing isn’t the solution we need. When we use their daughters’ pictures to make a point, we’re putting women back in the line of fire. Think about it—it’s like when people use 'Maa ki gali' or swearing at mothers to insult someone. In many cultures, this degrades women, suggesting they alone are responsible for a family’s honor. This mindset is dangerous and reinforces harmful ideas. Honor killings, the control over what women wear, and the belief that men should police their sisters, wives, and mothers all stem from this thinking. By attacking these men through their daughters, we’re perpetuating the idea that women are the custodians of honor and subject to men’s authority. Instead of using women as pawns in these arguments, let’s change the focus. Challenge these men directly on their misogyny. Call out their double standards without dragging their daughters into it. Women deserve respect and autonomy, not to be used as tools in a debate. What do you guys think?

As women, we are expected to fit snugly into the boxes that society has carved out for us. We have to be nurturing, but not too soft. We must be empathetic, but not too emotional. . Yet there’s one emotion that we’re steered away from entirely – anger. Our anger is met with discomfort, disapproval and disgust. . But this hidden rage has consequences – for individuals and the collective. Our buried spectrum of fury boils our blood and makes us play small. But what if creating space for our anger became a bold expression of activism? . For hundreds of years, white men and their white women enablers have held onto power and conditioned us to support them ??Abusing us into submission mentally, physically and sexually ??Making us feel that we are not knowledgeable enough, thin enough, or pretty enough for our opinions to matter ??Infantilizing us with rewards for trusting and obeying them? ??Encouraging us to distrust other women and ourselves ??Distracting us with social media and entertainment so we would not pay attention to ourselves ??Calling us a bitch for daring to assert ourselves until we stopped trying. We have become so used to all of this, that we are not even aware of how much power we have and how much is possible for us when we unite and lift each other up instead of competing with each other. It’s no wonder why so many of us are lying awake at night worrying about our future and our daughters, nonbinary and trans kids and feeling stuck and confused. Do you want to reclaim your power? The truth is we as white women have tremendous power. Today far too many of us are using our power to uphold white supremacy and harm women, especially Black and Indigenous women. We are also harming ourselves. When we choose to unite with Global Majority women, we can change everything. That’s what the Interracial Sisterhood Coalition is all about. Happy Mother’s Day, to all women-to mothers and the women that help prop us up- here is an interesting read on the original principles of the day.

Our recent discussions in the APA Women & Planning Division book club have centered around the enlightening insights from "Invisible Women." This book dives deep into the often-overlooked realm of data biases and their profound impact on women's lives. One quote from the book that particularly resonated with me is, "There is no such thing as a woman who doesn't work; there is only a woman who isn't paid for her work." This encapsulates the myriad contributions of women that often go unrecognized and undervalued. From unpaid caregiving responsibilities to underpaid or unrecognized labor in various sectors, women's work is vast and diverse, yet frequently sidelined in discussions and data analysis. The implications of this book extend far beyond individual experiences. It speaks to systemic inequalities and biases that permeate our societies, affecting everything from economic opportunities to policy decisions. By acknowledging and valuing the full spectrum of women's work and the impact of the "male standard", we can take significant strides towards creating more equitable and inclusive environments for all. "Invisible Women" challenges us to reevaluate our perceptions and approaches to data collection, analysis, and decision-making. It prompts us to consider how data biases perpetuate gender inequalities and hinder progress towards gender equality. Some great questions/insights from the book "Invisible Women" to consider for urban planners...does your jurisdiction or company collect data on travel patterns of women and men? Women tend to do "trip chaining", meaning multiple stops to and from work - to take children to daycare or school, pick up groceries...while men tend to travel to and from work, so this is how public transit routes are structured. How do girls and women perceive traveling at night where you live? Does your workplace offer safety equipment and uniforms to accommodate women's shorter heights and body sizes? Do researchers collect data on poverty rates by gender, and how women spend household funds compared to men? What are the workforce development needs of women compaired to men? After major disasters, are women included on disaster recovery committees? One example in the book described a post disaster recovery project without women - homes were built without any kitchens. What examples do you have of your own?
