Problem-solving and leading people was challenging for me as a person that can be naturally introverted, but when I joined the Marine Corps, I learned a process that helps you effectively lead people and accomplish virtually ANY problem called BAMCIS: The Six Troop Leading Steps. I use BAMCIS as a foundation and alter it slightly to create ROADTRIP: The 8-Step Process to Accomplish Any Goal. Learn the basis of that process below!

I find the Marine Corps Institute so fascinating as a bastion of the Progressive strain of U.S. history. Here's a page it featured in May 1942 in Leatherneck magazine. Note the bottom-left corner quote: "I'm not letting the Japs alter my study plans. I believe I can take care of both the Japs and Arithmetic." Thoughtful explanation of USMC's Boot Camp philosophy: metamorphosis is achieved via a grueling tryout where individual weaknesses are replaced by shared Corps values. Changes to boot camp reverberate downstream, altering culture in small ways that accumulate. They must be very carefully considered.

Happy 249th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps. When they thought about how to begin this year’s birthday message, the USMC could have addressed strategic competition, deterrence, force redesign and a number of other topics calculated to resonate with the widest possible audience. Instead, they deliberately chose to open with the Machine-Gunner’s Creed and the words “Every Marine a Rifleman and Everyone Fights,” a directive from the Commandant. The Machine-Gunner’s Creed is NOT going to resonate with the widest possible audience. Quite the opposite. This birthday message opener and the entire video are intended to connect with those who are culturally aligned with the Marine Corps; their target audience. Amidst a serious recruiting challenge across the Armed Forces, the Marines are hitting their numbers.
