When Will was born with a rare genetic disorder, his family's long journey began. He lives with multiple disabilities. His family sought help from the public school system, but they found they needed additional support as Will approached adulthood. Filled with uncertainty about Will’s future, the Park Family turned to Bobby Dodd Institute. BDI’s Benefits Navigation team guided Will’s family through?the process of applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?when Will turned 18. Together, the Benefits Navigation team and the Parks developed a futures plan for Will and secured approval for a Medicaid waiver—a major win, after being on a waiting list for 10 years. Through working with individuals like Will, BDI has developed a unique process that we are now sharing in the following paragraphs. Parkinson’s patients continue to grow in number. Visibility to this disease is seen in all aspects of our lives. Today Parkinson’s can be very normal work conversation when it wasn’t before. Celebrity death talk at the water cooler frequently includes the word Parkinson’s. Think about your work for a minute. Does your organization have a focus on disability awareness and advocacy? Really ? Does it? Do you have a Parkinson’s Hero in your organization? Many of us are always looking for things to get behind. Why not get behind your team. Does it make sense to give a Hero walk a go. Participation in these Hero walks just might be a way to communicate and strengthen your support both internally and in your communities. We are participating in the Grand Rapids Hero walk. Need a team to join. We are listed in the choices. We would love for all to join us in person or in spirit. It is a fun day. My heart is asking me to listen on sidewalks a lot and double down on writing my book on Sidewalk Talk. And May marks 9 years of Sidewalk Talk. Happy Birthday Sidewalk Talk. ?? Holy $hittballs you have taught me a lot. I am doing "book therapy" right now because I want to say some dangerous stuff about our dehumanizing ways. I want to be clear in my psyche as I write. The Identity Trap (yes a nod to Yascha Mounk's book of the same name) we are in right now I will roar about. Listening on sidewalks has chipped away at my reverence to identity obsession while I remain committed to inclusion and justice. I am glad to have sorted how to run Sidewalk Talk sustainably to my spirit while allowing it to safely expand. I burnt myself out three years ago. Lots of soul work, mistakes, learning boundaries. Operationally, Sidewalk Talk has expanded beyond a background checked chapter leader model where folks must pay to be a leader bc the application process is costly. Many just wanted to listen with a friend and not do a chapter. So...Tah Dah...we listened. Sidewalk Talk now gives you the "How To" to grab a friend and go listen in a friend group on the Sidewalk safely and effectively for FREE ... not even needing to be expressly part of Sidewalk Talk. A complete democratization. We still charge money for our trainings on Listening and Conflict resolution and chapter leadership so we can cover operating expenses.
