Q: Hey Re:Vision, what are you doing for Earth Day? A: Hi! Thanks for asking! We’re celebrating the world’s FIRST Core Living Building Certified project at Muhlenberg College and we’re really excited about it! International Living Future Institute created the Core Living Building Certification using 10 non-negotiables from the Living Building Challenge as the baseline to make our communities good for everyone. We’re really proud of the work of the entire team on this project, which met certification requirements after demonstrating 12 months of energy and water use that were above requirements. ? We think Core Living Building certification is a game-changer for everyone who owns, designs, or constructs building projects. It’s a holistic look at what our building projects should be doing as an entry to regenerative practice, where our work can exist in balance – or as a benefit – to the natural, built, and social communities around it. ? With one of the largest K-12 practices in the country, PBK Architects is a great source for checking in on the latest trends. Building Design+Construction Media recently chatted with Dan Boggio, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, Founder & Executive Chair, and Melissa Turnbaugh, AIA, NCARB, Partner & National Education & Innovation Leader, who reported that K-12 construction is alive and well, particularly in Texas, Calif. and Fla. where there’s been an unprecedented number of school referendums. Another major trend is school boards showing much interest in evidence-based research supporting learning. Consequently, more schools are requesting outdoor learning spaces, experiential learning environments and extra-curricular arts and sports programs and facilities—all of which have been shown to enhance learning for students. “In this environment we’re in where school boards are ready to adopt research-based design,… it’s the design community’s responsibility to harvest this research and then design accordingly. "I always recall having an interest in architecturally pleasing buildings. Engineering interest came later in high school." ??What has been your most proud moment as an architect/engineer? "A small project in Loveland, an elderly gentleman was very concerned about cracks in his foundation. I designed the fix and explained it to him." ??Do you remember your first day of college? What was it like? "Hectic, nervous, and fearful of getting lost. The amount of people was alarming, but I made it." ??What is one thing you enjoy doing outside of work? "Watching hockey, and spending time with my family." ??What is the greatest potential for architecture and/or engineering to shape a neighborhood community? "To provide an environment that is inviting, memorable and comfortable."

Emma Greenland presented her first CPD of the year to the team at Innes Associates Architecture & Urban Design this week. This Lunch and Learn session delivered via TEAMS showcased our work and research on 'Improving access to listening in mainstream schools' We provide practical guidance on how schools and architects can meet their duties to anticipate the needs of children with special hearing or communication needs (shcn) in accordance with key regulations and standards using a 'reasonable' adjustments approach. It was really useful to discuss Innes' recent experience on Post Occupancy Evaluation visits with Natalia Klus, Simon Innes and Corrie-Anne Rounding, share some common watch areas for acoustics which don't fall into the normal scope of compliance, and explore ideas for efficient acoustic finishes to?meet inclusive standards.
