Reflecting on April... Began the month in NOLA for National School Boards Association and heard keynotes from Ruby Bridges and Tim Shriver, traveled to Lockport (IL) where the EOS partnership has supported a year-1 increase of 24% participation in AP, and heard Jason Green ('solutions must be future-forward') keynote the Multicultural Student Achievement Network's Institute, in Madison. Takeaways: ~Relying on past practices and outdated models only serves to perpetuate existing inequities and limit the potential of students. ? ~To impact educational equity, we must embrace a 'future-forward' approach that breaks away from traditional and outdated teacher practices and assumptions about students’ academic potential. ? ~By looking forward, we can envision a more inclusive and equitable educational system that meets the needs of all learners, regardless of their background or circumstances. ? ~It is essential that we challenge the status quo, rethink our assumptions, and explore new ways of approaching education that are more responsive to the diverse needs of students. ? ~By embracing a 'future-forward' mindset, we can create a more dynamic and inclusive educational landscape that empowers all learners to thrive and succeed in their post-secondary pursuits. It's not too late to engage with Equal Opportunity Schools and join our dynamic cohort of high schools for the 2024-25 school year.

If you're someone who is talking about, planning for, trying to provide, or demanding "quality early care and education," I urge you to spend some time with Defending the Early Years' free, virtual summer institute "Advancing Quality in Defense of Early Childhood Education and Care" from June 24-26. "Quality has always been an important component in ensuring that all young children have access to early care and education. Nonetheless, defining, measuring, and guaranteeing high quality demonstrates the complexities and difficulty in making high quality for all a reality.?What does quality mean to you? How do you demonstrate quality in your program or classroom? How can the systems used to measure quality be improved? What does high quality mean in relation to justice and equity for disadvantaged and marginalized children? The 2024 Sixth Annual DEY Summer Institute will address these questions and many more." STEM should serve as the cornerstone of education everywhere. It encompasses much more than just science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM education fosters collaboration, builds confidence, enhances language skills, promotes communication, improves reading comprehension, connects to history, and encourages fluency. In essence, STEM education offers a well-rounded, holistic approach to learning.
Thank you, Jacksonville Elementary School Team, for allowing us to share STEM-based learning with your students and families last night! It was a joy to see familiar faces and parents inquiring about summer STEM camps for their children. Building future leaders is truly fantastic! https://lnkd.in/g3HgVKB2

What should assessments look like in early years? In today’s world, we’re driven to measure everything—scores, grades, milestones. But the most important lessons in early childhood can’t be captured in numbers. How do you measure kindness? Where’s the exam for empathy? How do you grade resilience? These “intangibles” are what early education is all about. When children learn to apologize, marvel at a butterfly, respect boundaries, or team up to create, they’re building character and empathy—the qualities every community needs. The Holistic Progress Card recommended by the NCF, Foundation Stage, embraces this by valuing each child’s unique journey, capturing their voices and stories. It’s a shift toward assessments that truly matter, helping children grow into compassionate, grounded individuals. Let’s give our youngest learners what they need most: time, space, and the freedom to learn life’s most essential lessons.

Every year, we hear about tremendous academic accomplishments of teenagers earning college degrees at a time when most others are simply graduating from high school. Yes, we should praise and honor these super students, but we should also ask ourselves, how many others could have achieved the same levels of education while they were teenagers? How many are being left behind because our system fails them? I believe there are thousands of children capable of doing more than tradition expects. We are proving it in Gary and Indianapolis, Indiana and in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our open enrollment charter schools empower and support teenagers wanting to do more than tradition expects. And they are proving that if given the support, they can do more and want to do more. We are not talking about a few students, either. We are talking about many students. Our students regularly earn associate degrees and some have pushed themselves to earn full bachelor’s degrees while in high school. We seek to make this the norm, not the exception. https://lnkd.in/gyqAyrvm

Today the Junior Achievement of Florida Foundation celebrates Senator Jarrid “Jay” Collins of the 14th?District of the Florida Senate for his championing of 3DE Schools with the securing of a $2.9M appropriation from the State of Florida. This support will drive systemic change in participating high schools and propel the expansion of 3DE to additional schools throughout the state in the coming years. Thank you Senator Collins for believing in Junior Achievement's mission and serving as a committed leader in providing opportunities for Florida students. In Florida, 3DE is currently implemented in 19 schools in 8 school districts in partnership with 4 regional Junior Achievement areas. On average, Florida 3DE students experience 18.2% fewer cases of chronic absenteeism,?26% higher graduation rates, and 86% of students report seeing the relevance of school in their education (vs. 46%) when compared to their non-3DE peers. 3DE is an instructional model designed to systemically re-engineer high school education to provide economic opportunity for all students by developing in students of all walks of life the competencies needed to thrive in the workplace by applying those skills to real-world business cases and entrepreneurship, inside and outside of the classroom.
