This Monday, 4th March 2024, we woke up to more injuries, deaths, and loved ones holding onto the lifeless bodies of their children, feeling the agonizing helplessness. Three months into 2024, there seems to be nothing worthwhile celebrating. As we approach Ramadan, when our brothers and sisters are being killed by bombs and starvation, it's crucial to reflect on what is truly worth celebrating. In the context of workplace recognitions, celebrations, and awards, it's essential to consider how these events align with our values and humanity. Winning a trophy while choosing not to speak up for those who are suffering raises questions about the true meaning of success. How can we celebrate when we fail at the most basic aspect of being human—compassion and empathy for others?

Too often, people are hyper-focused on what’s missing, what’s not going according to plan, and what’s going wrong. But that’s a trap—it pulls attention from what’s right, who’s showing up, and all the good happening right in front of you. Real success? It’s not about chasing what’s missing—it’s about valuing what’s right here. The people, the moments, the process. When you lock into appreciating what’s in front of you, that’s when things start to really move. When we had Alyssa Ustby on, we gave her flowers now, right in the thick of her journey. Why wait to celebrate someone’s impact until later? Celebrating people in their prime, giving them their flowers while they’re at it—that’s the real win. Appreciate what’s here. Focus on who’s here. My nan is celebrating 99 years young today! ?? We're four generations strong, and the anticipation for that royal birthday card in a year is making her very excited! ?? As we celebrate it got me thinking about the valuable lessons I've learnt from her over the years. One thing in particular - telling a story! She has told many stories from her days in the land army to being a farmers wife on the Devonshire farm. Reflecting on this, stories are important in our businesses too! They create an emotional connection between your brand and your audience. When people can relate to a story, they are more likely to connect with your brand on a personal level. Emotions drive consumer behaviour, and stories are a powerful way to evoke emotions, build trust and feel more connected. I'm embarking on a journey to add another chapter to my personal story this year. We're on a mission to connect with my nan 100 times this year—sharing stories, laughter, and creating memories. I used to get caught up in getting it all done. There was always more to do and I thought if I could just work harder or work smarter, I would feel better. I would feel accomplished. But I just never got there. What I didn't realize, was that it would never be done. Celebrating was something I only did for the huge gains which did not happen very often. So I didn't cultivate those feelings of joy. I learned over time that celebrating your wins more frequently brought more joy to my life. So celebrate more often. You did great this week. Give yourself a pat on the back and find a way you can celebrate today. ?? ?? Do something that brings you joy. ?? Have a picnic. You can do this at a park, at the beach, in your own yard, or even your own living room. ?? Cook a special meal. Doing this with friends or your kids can be fun. ?? Garden. Being outside, close to nature, and having something beautiful to look at when you are done can be a very joyful activity. ?? Explore your neighborhood. Just wander. You never know what treasures you will find. ?? Or just have a dance party. It's important to celebrate. It's important to cultivate those good feelings as much as you can. You are important! So, make it your purpose today to celebrate you.

I know 70.3 is a light snack for some of you ultra-crazies out there. This is my kit for the ride this weekend. I’m a week early for Memorial Day. But the day itself isn’t something I celebrate. Some treat it like the official summer kickoff…or 4th of July Jr. I do it differently. I remember every day. It’s not just the heroes I rode with. I remember the sounds of their families crying uncontrollably during memorial services. And while taps played. ???????????? I don’t know if the life I’m living is worthy of the sacrifices they made. But I can tell you after working from one professional crisis to the next…for multiple corporate masters… Nothing compares to what they gave. <<< Not even close >>> Similarly, nothing compares to the sense of grief or burden. It’s not that I lack empathy. Quite the opposite. I recognize the brewing inner storms of others, and the pitfalls of tactical reactions versus empirically informed strategy. Stacking the challenges means that within the crisis of today and tomorrow, I draw upon the lessons from the wins and losses. …especially the losses, and who was there. All to say, if we’re coworkers, whatever challenge we face isn’t the first crisis, nor will it be the last. No matter how unprecedented.
