I just returned from the 4th Annual Retrofit Canada Conference in Vancouver and am still excited. Here's a recap: Event Highlights Panel Discussions The panels featured diverse experts who shared insights on various aspects of retrofitting, including policy frameworks, financing options, and technological advancements. Financing Retrofits Exploring innovative financing mechanisms to support large-scale retrofitting projects. Grid Modernization Expansion, modernization, and decarbonization of our energy grid are crucial. Future Trends The conference concluded with a forward-looking discussion on the future of retrofitting in Canada. Emphasis was placed on the need for continued innovation, policy support, and public-private partnerships to drive the retrofitting agenda forward. Takeaways Collaboration is Key The event underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in achieving our retrofitting goals. Public, private, and non-profit sectors must work together to create scalable solutions. Innovative Financing Finding new ways to finance retrofitting projects is crucial. On the second day of Opportunity Finance Network's 2024 Conference, President & CEO Tia Boatman Patterson, Esq. also had the opportunity to sit on a panel discussing green multifamily housing alongside accomplished movers in the space! With expertise from Amy Brusiloff, Luba Kim-Reynolds, and Drew Ades, "Financing the Decarbonization of Multifamily Housing" overviewed the pervasive climate challenge facing the industry and the unique opportunity to further align housing and climate efforts through green capital. Importantly, green capital investments into housing are not untested or intangible - the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund represents one case study for potential integration of decarbonization with the existing processes for multifamily affordable housing. Of course we should expect a new minister from a different political party to have a different perspective on the Northern Ireland's economic mission. But I see Minister Murphy's statement as a very promising approach to the country's future, and no sense of throwing out anything good from the previous strategy from over two years ago. I support the all island approach to the economy and to energy particularly. For example, the Single Electricity Market gets the mention it deserves. Of course I am particularly pleased to see mention of #geothermal as one of our indigenous energy sources, in the same breath as #wind and #biomethane. (I would suggest adding #solar thinking both #pv and #solarthermal). When Niall, Brian and I founded our geothermal energy startup Causeway Energies three years ago, we wanted it to be a local island of Ireland company with global ambitions. We still do. So I am really encouraged by this mission statement, and look forward to building Causeway as a business with a growing project pipeline, both at home and away. #energytransition #energypolicy #geothermalenergy #umby

“It will lead to tens of billions of pounds of private sector investment in green hydrogen, carbon capture, clean steel, renewable-ready ports and gigafactories unlocked through a new national wealth fund that will create half a million good, well-paid jobs.” In the pandemic, The Genesis Initiative - www.genesis-initiative.org - called for the creation of a “National Wealth Fund” on the basis that pandemics (like wars and certain other huge events or sets of circumstances) are just too big for private enterprise to deal with. When the whole nation is in need, the whole nation needs to respond. Wealth funds aren’t Socialist or Communist; they are social and communal - quite different concepts. We need national action to save the nation. Why is that so difficult to accept?
