At its core, Energy Transfer’s $300 million lawsuit is a racist attempt to erase Indigenous leadership from the historic (and famously grassroots!) Dakota Access Pipeline protests. It accuses Greenpeace of things we did not do. But this isn’t just Greenpeace on trial. If Energy Transfer wins, it would set a dangerous legal precedent, potentially exposing anyone who dares to speak out against environmental harm to legal bullying and financial ruin. The climate justice movement is on trial. Our right to protest is on trial. Tens of thousands of individuals and more than 300 organizations have signed our open letter calling on Energy Transfer to drop this case. According to The Wall Street Journal earlier this month, Energy Transfer investors have already "expressed concerns" about their crusade against Greenpeace and free speech, worrying it will lead to a "reinvigorated" climate justice movement. In the 2024 edition of our annual Embedding Justice report, we reflect on our journey and share the who, why, what, where, and how of Embedding Justice at Greenpeace. Of note is that we are deeply committed to the power of people and our collective efforts to build a vibrant planet for all.
