The Basic Needs Grant program offered by the U.S. Department of Education is the result of nearly a decade of work to get federal funds to colleges for their efforts. The application is now open with an August 5 deadline. After that closes, colleges will have another important opportunity via the Postsecondary Student Success Program. Both opportunities prioritize funds for evidence-based activities. So I’m deeply proud that a study I led is the only one in the What Works Clearinghouse showing promising evidence for basic needs supports! https://lnkd.in/gMwACgQR I learned this bit of information yesterday from Bhaktirose Dawdy, MPA, OD Cert., even though apparently my team’s work was assessed in November 2021. Doing WWC-quality research has always been my goal, this is my second study to rate well, and so I’m surprised, honored, and deeply gratified. The study examined the impacts of nudging students to use a basic needs center at Amarillo College and it was the second study I’d led with Russell Lowery-Hart, Cara Crowley, Jordan Herrera, and Colin Witherspoon. We found that not only did very inexpensive nudging boost use of the center but it also increased the rate that students passed out of developmental/remedial coursework ?????? https://lnkd.in/gWN4RunR Huge thanks to Trellis Foundation Jenny Achilles Kristin Boyer for funding that project and to Christine Baker-Smith and Kallie Clark for conducting it with me. We clearly need more basic needs studies in the WWC- and even more importantly practitioners need to know more about what works and why. I sit on the Board of Directors for MnEEP as their current Secretary. We are thrilled to share that?CUNY ASAP|ACE?is featured in the U.S. Department of Education’s new playbook,?Implementing Holistic Advising and Wraparound Services to Equitably Improve Postsecondary Student Success. Katie Giardello, PhD, Senior Policy Advisor for CUNY ASAP|ACE National Replication, discussed how programs like CUNY ASAP|ACE serve as scalable and replicable models that center around comprehensive advising. As Katie shared: “We’re in a space where our sector is working to underscore the value-add of higher education as a social mobility engine and put authenticity behind pledges to close equity gaps in completion rates. For me, replicating CUNY’s ASAP model and emphasizing holistic advising and a complete set of wraparound supports for students are tactical solutions to the social problem of low college completion rates, particularly for marginalized populations we have not well-served over time.” https://lnkd.in/eQtCtZHE ?

At College Futures Foundation, we aspire to help shape better futures for Californians and their families. We believe that achieving a robust, inclusive society and economy in California requires moving beyond the status quo and ensuring that the most underserved learners and workers in our state — Black and Latinx adults, those aged 25 or older, and those facing outsized financial barriers — have clear pathways to prosperity. Today, we stand at a critical inflection point for our state and nation. The pace of change in technologies and job markets is increasing while income gaps persist. It is time to center and update our collective perspectives on learners’ aspirations and ensure that postsecondary education supports a thriving democracy and delivers on the promise of economic mobility for people of all backgrounds. We aim to tackle the crisis of value in postsecondary education by adopting a deeply learner-centered approach tailored to meet current challenges and opportunities. For College Futures Foundation, being learner-centered begins by hearing directly from learners — not only those who are currently enrolled, but more importantly, those who have stopped out and those who have never had the chance to enroll. Through our vital partnership with Gallup and Lumina Foundation, we have gathered insights from over 1,300 Californians without a college degree about their attitudes, values, experiences, and challenges related to postsecondary education. The findings in our new State of Higher Education in California report reveal that while Californians overwhelmingly value a postsecondary degree or credential, many struggle with attainment because of the difficulties balancing education with work or personal responsibilities. We hope the insights from this survey will empower institutional leaders, innovators, policymakers, and advocates to better understand how to support learner-centered innovations, reduce barriers to obtaining postsecondary degrees or credentials, and ensure attainment aligns to better jobs and upward economic mobility. Together, we can meet this moment and set a course toward a brighter future where all Californians can thrive.

Representing Menlo College, students Sophia Umanzor, Brandy Ix Dzib, and Jaedyn Tillis attended Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities Day in the Capitol 2024 at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. United with students from diverse backgrounds, they were driven by a common purpose—to advocate for the continuation of support for programs like the CalGrant and higher education as a whole. "My favorite part of this event was listening to everyone's stories on how scholarships, such as CalGrant have helped them achieve huge milestones in college. More than 50% of CalGrant recipients are first-generation students who have broken barriers to get this far. I am honored to use my voice and share my journey to advocate for my community because higher education should be attainable to all groups of people who work hard". - Sophia Umanzor Our students engaged in lobbying efforts and dialogues with policy advisors and legislators to advocate for ongoing support of the Cal Grant and higher education initiatives. The Cal Grant serves as a critical scholarship benefiting over 300,000 students throughout California, enabling them to pursue studies at private institutions like Menlo College. With more than 49% of our students identifying as first-generation, the disparity in funding between private institutions like Menlo College and public schools is stark. Therefore, it was essential for our students to gather diverse voices and connect with peers from other private institutions to effectively convey our message and address these funding disparities. Please keep this in mind when speaking to students about higher ed.

This week was great for content if you’re passionate about higher education (which I am). The Chronicle of Higher Education hosted its Festival focused on the Road Ahead to 2035. There was a lot of discussion about the evolution of higher education and questions about higher education's social responsibility. While I was unable to tune in for all of the festival, I had a chance to catch a few bits over the course of the three days. Toward a More Equal Education: Associate Professor Anthony Jack inaugural faculty director of the Boston University Newbury Center shared highlights from his latest book, Class Dismissed: When Colleges Ignore Inequality & Students Pay the Price. He spoke about the importance of not just giving first-generation and low-income students access to college and getting them inside the gates but also preparing and supporting them by giving them access to high-quality, high-impact jobs that set them up for careers once they leave college. Otherwise, higher education risks deepening inequality by not addressing inequities around campus jobs. Divided and Disrupted: Beth McMurtrie, a senior writer with the Chronicle, spoke about how students seem increasingly cynical about college and anxious about their futures. Students see college as a game and the transactional nature of colleges may shoulder some of the responsibility. Colleges need to pay closer attention to how they position and promote their programs to students. Overcoming the Loneliness Epidemic: Jeremy Nobel, CEO of the Foundation for Art & Healing, talked about the importance of addressing mental health on campuses and replacing the short-term dopamine effect of social media with creative activities. He described how the creative act of making makes dopamine go up and stress cortisol go down. Higher Ed as a Political Player: Margaret Spellings, President and CEO at Bipartisan Policy was asked to predict the future of higher education in 2035 and she anticipates that higher education as we know it will be over and there will be a redistribution of the higher ed ecosystem Bridging Education and Work: Ruth Watkins, President, Strada Education Foundation, observed that higher ed needs to start offering stackable pathways to students and do a better job of more directly connecting education to career prospects. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ASKED: HARTSOOK ANSWERED With the historically significant one of the few $100 million campaigns at Wichita State, many felt HARTSOOK would focus on that field exclusively. While over 32 years according to our published client list recognizing each client on average contracted with the company 4.5 times over 32 years, resulted in 1895 educationally related client contracts. Enjoyed each of them, it was my personal calling and having served as COO of three Kansas colleges and universities with success and achievement, we attracted numerous colleges, universities, speciality education programs, K-12 private education, etc. The uniqueness was the special need each institution had. Unlike some consultancies who specialized in the elite, who really didn’t need consultation, we focused on those with great opportunity, yet not seized. We had every state in the nation represented, plus those on an international front.

When CSP was established in September 1893 as a three-year high school with 30 students preparing to be pastors, our founders could not have imagined what CSP would become. By its second year, enrollment reached 54, and then 68 in the third year. By the time CSP added the fourth year of high school in 1902, enrollment crossed the 100-student threshold for the first time. In 1921, enrollment crossed the 200-student mark. Growth continued until a high point of 280 in 1930 before the pressures of the Great Depression caused a contraction that dropped enrollment to less than half that peak by 1941. By 1945, enrollment was back above 200 students. A new record was set with 283 students in 1947. In 1951, the second year of enrollment for female students, CSP crossed the 300-student mark. The 1950s and 1960s saw incredible growth due to coeducation and the introduction of bachelor’s degree programs. By 1967, total enrollment between the high school and college was nearly 800. The high school division spun off as Concordia Academy in the following years. Enrollment grew slowly over the next two decades, and by 1987, CSP reached the 1,000-student mark. This was two years after the launch of the Concordia School of Adult Learning (CSAL). In 1990, a master’s degree was offered through CSAL, and with the advent of online programs later that decade, CSP reached the 2,000-student threshold in 2003. The next decade saw fairly steady enrollment totals until the tuition reset of 2013. Since 2013, Concordia’s growth trajectory has been remarkable. The 3,000-student mark was hit that year, and 4,000 was reached the following year. Then, in 2018, CSP’s population reached 5,000 students. Despite the challenges within the marketplace and global challenges like COVID, we continue to thrive. Today, CSP is Minnesota's second largest private university; last academic year, our fall enrollment was a record 5,800 students in St. Paul, Portland, and online. Our responsive, relevant, and real education is making a crucial difference in the lives of our graduates, their families, and the people they serve. Though CSP looks different now than in 1893, we continue to be a Christ-centered Lutheran university that raises leaders in business, healthcare, education, the arts, and the church. #WeAreCSP #LeadingInLegacy

??Did you know Mississippi State Senator John Polk, R-Hattiesburg, introduced SB 2726, which proposes the closure of three state-funded universities. The Institutions of Higher Learning's Board of Trustees was designated to select three universities for closure in 2028. According to the IHL enrollment report, over 77,000 students were enrolled in the state's nine public universities at the start of the 2023 fall semester in August. The decision on which universities to close would ultimately fall to the Institutions of Higher Learning's Board of Trustees, adding another layer of uncertainty and concern. The board would need to carefully weigh the potential consequences of their decision, considering the impact on students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. The bill introduced into the Mississippi Senate, calling for the closure of three state-funded universities by June 30, 2028, has serious implications for the future of Higher Education among the American Descendants of Slaves (ADOS). Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played a crucial role in providing accessible and quality education to ADOS students. The closure of HBCUs would not only limit access to higher education for ADOS but also erode a cornerstone of cultural and historical significance within the community. This is a call to action for anyone who has attended an HBCU. It is important that the ADOS community, as well as supporters of HBCUs, contact their state legislators in Mississippi to express their concerns and advocate for the preservation of these institutions. A coordinated effort to reach out to lawmakers, through calls, emails, and letters, is necessary to ensure that the voices of those impacted by the potential closures are heard. To contact Mississippi state legislators, individuals can find their respective representatives and senators on the Mississippi Legislature website and access their contact information. It is important for the community to engage in this process to protect the future of HBCUs and the opportunities they provide ADOS students. The institutions at risk of closure due to this bill are: Alcorn State University Delta State University Jackson State University Mississippi State University Mississippi University for Women Mississippi Valley State University The University of Southern Mississippi The University of Mississippi 02-29-24 @2:29 PM EST
