The urban landscape of future cities is like arteries, pumping life to the city. The link between urbanism and ecology is more than human needs. Landscape ecological urbanism promotes assets that provide resilience & habitats for wildlife. It also creates unique opportunities to rethink our water cycle inside our cities. In this visionary approach to urban planning, every park, green space, and tree-lined street isn't just a pretty backdrop – they're vital assets that bolster the city's resilience and provide crucial habitats for wildlife. Imagine urban parks designed not only for recreation but also as natural stormwater retention areas, mitigating flooding and enhancing water quality. Picture green corridors weaving through the city, connecting fragmented habitats and allowing wildlife to roam freely. In these landscapes, native plants and green infrastructure flourish, providing food and shelter for birds, insects, and other urban wildlife. But it's not just about protecting wildlife; it's about nurturing a dynamic coexistence between humans and nature. By promoting biodiversity and ecological resilience, Landscape Ecological Urbanism creates healthier, more sustainable cities for all inhabitants. So, let's reimagine our urban landscapes as vibrant, biodiverse havens where resilience and wildlife thrive alongside bustling city life. Through thoughtful design and stewardship, we can cultivate environments where nature's resilience becomes our greatest asset, ensuring a more harmonious and sustainable future for generations to come. #Urbanplanning #Sustainablecities #Liveablecities #Urbandesign #Landscapedesign

Talking about trees, as usual! ???? Why do we plant trees here at Trees for Cities? They...: - Help reduce the severity of the urban heat island effect - Absorb CO2 - Provide valuable habitat for wildlife - Can help reduce the effects of particulate pollution - Can help reduce the effects of flooding - Are great for mental wellbeing - Bring people together on our community planting days - Also look beautiful! So let's try and green the grey: Less hard surfaces which are detrimental to the environment, and to be honest often very boring - lets green them with trees and all manner of plants to make healthy and beautiful cities for the future. ??
"I just love being in greenery. I think it's nice to be surrounded by trees." ?? Our Landscape Designer, Alfie Davies, tells us why planting trees is important and about all the benefits they bring to people and the planet! Stay informed with Trees for Cities: https://lnkd.in/eqNDJ-eR

Vertical gardening is the future of town architecture
Imagine waking up to the sound of birds chirping, surrounded by lush greenery, and breathing in fresh air every day. That's the power of biophilic design in creating harmonious communities. Bosco Verticale in Milan, is a great example. It’s a vertical forest that houses approximately 15,000 plants and over 90 different species of trees and shrubs. Not only is it a beautiful sight to behold, but it is also capable of absorbing 30 tons of carbon dioxide every year, which improves air quality and reduces the urban heat island effect. Personally, I believe these type of project should feature in all of our major urban areas. Who else wants to live in a community that embraces nature? #biophilicdesign #harmony #community #urbanforest #rewilding Repost: Scott Waters

In contrast to the Park which is typically passive and landscaped, or the Playground which is typically active and includes constructed elements, the Green is more of a minimal, flexible, and adaptive space which can be used for activity as well as standing on its own passively as something calming to the eye. Variety in urban greenspaces is a positive result of proper #citybuilding #todayspublicspace

What we learned from illuminating Ryde Interchange, Isle of Wight ?? Preserving heritage and reducing light pollution is a delicate balancing act, especially on an island known for its Victorian charm and pristine dark skies. Here's what we took away from our work on the Ryde Interchange scheme, a project that aimed to modernise the island’s busiest transport hub without sacrificing its unique character: ?? Light pollution is a key consideration As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Isle of Wight is committed to protecting its dark skies. Ensuring that our luminaires minimised sky glow was essential to helping the island maintain its natural beauty and progress toward official Dark Skies status. ??? Aesthetics matter in conservation areas Matching the aesthetics of historical surroundings was crucial for this project. We designed luminaires that blended seamlessly with the Victorian heritage of Ryde, complete with decorative embellishments to maintain the area's charm. ?? Sustainability in supply chains counts With all materials sourced within 60 miles of our factory, we were able to reduce carbon emissions and support the local economy—values that align perfectly with the Isle of Wight Council’s own sustainability goals. ?? Performance must never be compromised The luminaires not only met the high performance and efficiency standards required but also achieved energy savings of up to 75% compared to traditional HID installations. Collaborating with Island Roads and Isle of Wight Council has reinforced our belief that innovation, sustainability, and heritage can work hand in hand. #IsleOfWight #DarkSkies #SustainableLighting #HeritageLighting #EnergyEfficiency #StreetLighting
