A quick exit can flip a home. Provide value for a few families. No major cultural influence. A more long term real estate play can work to revitalize an entire downtown district and become the central focus of arts, food and music for an entire community. This takes about 10-20 years, but increases the value of everything in the surrounding neighborhood. The same is true for entertainment. You can invest in one movie and get a quick return, it might impact a few lives. But most likely it will be forgotten shortly. Or you can invest in a complete entertainment development that produces stories and entertainment for hundreds of years and becomes a source of cultural influence for generations. One thing is certain. The quicker the exit the smaller the cultural return. But in both scenarios it is cultural return that provides the larger financial value.

A couple of weeks ago, the entire Global Detroit team traveled to Dallas, Texas— actively learning, listening, and leaning into all the experiences, best practices, lessons, ideas, and insights from leading experts in immigrant welcoming,?the City of Dallas and?Welcoming America, at the national?Welcoming Interactive?- 2024. The annual conference brings together 800 attendees?working in and eager to engage on pivotal topics such as immigrant inclusion,?economic development, civic engagement, government leadership, and more. But we didn’t send our entire team down to Texas just for the fun of it— we’re ecstatic to announce (if you haven’t already heard), that next year Global Detroit will be?partnering with the Detroit Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and Economic Inclusion to co-host the 2025 national Welcoming Interactive right here in DETROIT, happening?May 20-22, 2025. With the distinction of being the first?Certified Welcoming City?in Michigan, the City of Detroit and our team are excited to showcase welcoming in Detroit, Southeast Michigan, and across our state?with you. We believe that our region leads the nation in efforts to?build?strong communities that intentionally connect and include people of all backgrounds. We never talk about our homes as places attached to our work. This is my town. It doesn't look very nice here does it? A bus station pic fails to give gravitas and a year or so ago, the building on the right was empty space. Poole was where I was born and as adults, we start to see our homes through a different lens. For me, I treat home as my playground. We test out ideas, we see what works, we invite people to join in (sea swim anyone?). When your work becomes a reflection of where you live, it creates impact. We have 200 people heading down at the end of April for Creator Day. It's on the left side at Lighthouse - Arts and Entertainment | Poole and on the right is FOUNDRY. We have Failed Nights there the evening before the event to welcome everyone. The idea is to turn this part of Poole into a 'precinct' for Creator Day. When you embody what you advocate in your own space, vocalising connections and activities, you create belonging within the town (or city) you are part of. This strength is pivotal for talent retention, attractiveness to others, and overall economic health within the community. Online visibility is still important, but grounding your work in your local landscape is a powerful strategy.

As described by the Urban Land Institute, "Creative placemaking, or leveraging art and culture in tandem with great design, is a proven accelerator for real estate development projects."
