Cultiva Farms, an Italian family-owned business, started Florida leafy green trials in 2015 using high tunnels for year-round production. The company overcame summer heat and weather challenges by utilizing passive temperature management and soil rotation techniques. #FedericoBoscolo, president, aims to expand the business and create a grower consortium, while continually refining techniques to adapt to regional climates and improve farm efficiency. ?? Are skyscrapers the farms of the future? A lot of our food is already grown indoors in greenhouses, but vertical farming takes this to the next level. ?? By stacking plants, vertical farms can produce significantly more food in much less space, bringing agriculture right into city centres. In the US, people on the East Coast get their strawberries flown 2,000 miles from California or Mexico. ?? Thanks to a vertical farm in Richmond, Virginia, they can now enjoy fresh strawberries grown within an hour’s drive. The facility, set up by Plenty?, already produces over 8 million punnets of strawberries per year—and this is just the beginning. ?? Some people may know that my family has a farm as a side hustle. Farming is in our blood and it’s part of who we are. We are farmers. It’s an honor to be the featured farmer by Pitney Meadows - because they set the bar very high. The lessons I’ve learned in farming have helped immensely in my professional life. -Teamwork - Working alongside my Grandfather, my Dad, my Uncle, my brother, my cousins, my wife, my kids has been both a gift and a struggle! -Resiliance - Learning to push though obstacles - because often there’s no other option -Optimism - although farmers tend to appear pessimistic, I believe they all are hopeful for a better year next year. -Task focus - farming is often a race against weather. It can be a hustle to get hay baled before the rain, or to get a crop planted before the peak planting window closes, or to get that last graze on the back 40 before winter arrives. This requires focus, and an unwillingness to quit before the work is done. Slate River Farm is an excellent example of how beef and pork can be raised sustainably in Upstate NY. They provide our local community with an example of how farming can truly be regenerative and not destructive. When I hear people say we need to end the practice of eating beef for the sake of the environment, I feel like that’s trying to hit the “easy button” on the country’s complex problem of climate change. We can farm sustainably. Like we are doing in so many areas of green purchasing, we can educate consumers and shift our dollars towards farms that share our values. We can slow down the consumption of beef; value our food, and value our farmers.

The shuttering of any family farm is a massive loss, and is unfortunately a trend we’re seeing too often. But it’s more than a sad local or regional story – its implications ripple across the future of our agricultural system. While we continue to promote the importance of scaling regenerative agriculture, let’s pause to consider who should be leading the way. Multi-generational, small-scale farmers carry critical institutional knowledge. They have been the backbone of our agricultural system for so long and will be crucial in ushering in the future of agriculture as well. ??Thrilled to read about WesleyLife's hydroponic farm in Des Moines, combatting food insecurity in central Iowa! This 3,000 sq ft facility utilizes hydroponic methods to grow crops without soil. Managed by Aaron Thormodsen and his team of volunteers, this farm is making a significant impact in the community. ??One key feature is the controlled environment, maintaining a constant temperature of 73°F and 50% humidity, with 18 hours of bright lights daily. This accelerates growth, allowing crops to mature in just three weeks compared to six at an outdoor farm. The production efficiency is impressive, with the farm aiming to produce 1 ton of crops annually. ??The impact is tremendous, with over 500 pounds of lettuce harvested already, providing approximately 8,000 salads for the Meals on Wheels program.
