Allyship is a term that's been widely discussed this week as we've united against fascism across the country in the ongoing fight against racism. But what does it mean to be a true ally? Allyship is defined as “active support for the rights of a minority or marginalised group without being a member of it.” But are our actions driven by genuine commitment, or are we more concerned with how others perceive us? Too often, allyship turns into a trend. While I’m not suggesting that those who support marginalised communities aren’t true allies, real allyship should involve raising awareness and engaging in uncomfortable conversations. As someone living with HIV, I actively work to bring about change by openly discussing my status and sharing my story, hoping to create a sense of comfort and inclusion. Interestingly, it’s not those who are still "in the closet" who feel uncomfortable; instead, it’s often those who aren’t living with HIV who become nervous and shy away from the subject. I frequently hear, “I’m not sure what questions to ask because I don’t want to offend anyone.” But allies should be the ones asking those tough, thought-provoking questions. Being part of an intersectional community within a marginalised group can be exhausting, especially when I share educational resources only to find that I’m reaching the same audience over and over again. Recently, I watched a recording from #AIDS2024, where Richard Angell OBE shared some alarming statistics about the number of people we still need to educate. If we get this right, we could achieve zero transmissions by 2030. This means that your allyship can help prevent others from having to share a story like mine. I'd like to remind you that male suicide in the first year after diagnosis is elevated by 75%. Your allyship has the power to save lives. PozVibe Cast is a podcast created by two Irish HIV activists, Robbie Lawlor and Veda, which focuses on topics related to living with HIV. The podcast aims to challenge the stigma surrounding HIV and provides a platform for open discussions about the realities of life with the condition. The show covers various subjects such as mental health, relationships, the experiences of people living with HIV, and the importance of visibility and support within the LGBTQ+ community. The hosts often share their personal experiences and invite guests to contribute to these conversations, creating a supportive and informative space for listeners. PozVibe Cast is celebrated for its candid, positive, and educational approach to discussing HIV, making it a valuable resource for both those living with HIV and those looking to understand more about the condition. Episode 2 is with Ana Matronic who you’ll know better as the Scissor Sister Queen. So go, on, give it a listen and start a real HIV Education today! #Allyship #HIVAwareness #HIV #LGBTQIAplus #Health #Podcast

A stark reminder about how hard it can be to 'come out' as a patient. As patient advocates, we share deeply personal parts of our lives with the world, even though we may find it hard to speak to those closest to us. This is especially tough when the disease is shrouded in stigma. But these personal stories are hugely powerful, bring our experiences to life, and can help bring hope, strength, and courage to other patients. We'd like to thank Tamás for speaking to us with such openness and raw honesty. Episode ??: https://lnkd.in/ek6AUmq8 #patientadvocacy #HIV #AIDS #AIDSadvocacy #stigma #podcast
