The move to electric vehicles (EVs) is underway and is poised for a rapid transition. Yet widespread adoption of EVs is hampered by challenges related to affordability, batteries, and the supply chain for electrical components. To put the time scale of the transition into perspective, consider that in the U.S., the Biden administration’s goal (backed by private and public sector investments) is to have 50% of all new vehicle sales be electric by 2030. That is an enormous jump from the current state of affairs. In 2022, only 5.6% of light vehicles registered in the U.S. were electric. Harsh reality: Nearly half of all dealers (41%) are “not confident at all” in their automakers EV strategy, according to CDK Global. But it’s not due to politics or charging stations… It was concern over not offering the right powertrains to match consumer demand. Automakers are rolling out new 800-volt electric vehicle platforms, which promise to cut charging time in half. Today most EVs are based on 400-volt architectures — and for a standard vehicle like the VW ID.4 it can take about 20 minutes to add 200 kilometers (124 miles) of range. An 800-volt EV can do the same job in about 10 minutes.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) says that U.S. consumer acceptance of EVs?hinges on automakers delivering four things: 1. 20-minute charging times. 2. 30 minutes maximum to find and wait for access to a fast-charging station. 3. 350 miles or more of driving range per charge. 4.
