We did some street interviews recently for content and asked people about healthcare. We would ask something like: "Who is responsible for your health?" The unanimous answer was "me, I am". Next question: "Who should be responsible for the cost of your healthcare?" This got a host of different answers, and a lot of paths led to the government. If you are responsible for your health, then that means you are responsible for the consequences of poor health decisions. Am I crazy? Is that not clear logic? I understand that some healthcare can seem a bit out of control and there is conversation to be had around extreme scenarios. Still, the truth is that health insurance and healthcare in general profits by having the general public believe that the cost of healthcare is unknowable and furthermore unmanageable. The world progresses when individuals are responsible and accountable for their own decisions. I admit that health is incredibly nuanced and the unexpected is always lurking, but the path we have taken doesn't lessen that issue - it has only exploited it.
