FYI: For any Cairns folk out there - especially if you’re on the Northern Beaches! Please share and spread the word: PALM COVE ENTRY STATEMENT G’day all, Many Northern Beaches locals have been speaking for years about the need for a better solution to traffic issues along the State owned Captain Cook Highway. This section, which is directly next to the old zoo site in Palm Cove, is slated to have another set of stop lights installed in the not too distant future! We all know the headaches the two sets that already exist at Clifton Beach (which is merely a stones throw to the south of this site!) cause and by extending suburbia even further north to here would be a terrible outcome. We have an opportunity to remedy this though. There is a State election only a few weeks away and Council has endorsed a set of priorities that we are advocating for, and this entrance statement concept is one of 9 priorities we believe is needed. All Barron River & Cairns Candidates and MP’s have been briefed on this, but if you could also email, call or speak to them about this opportunity, it would really help to build some positive pressure, in order to get the best outcome possible for our ‘Jewel in the Crown’. Even sharing this post will help - another set of traffic lights would be a terrible result! I have attached some concepts of what an entrance statement might look like and this idea is also endorsed by other organizations, including TTNQ (Tourism Tropical North QLD), APC (Advance Palm Cove), TPC (Tourism Palm Cove) and more… I will put a link at the bottom of this post that shows all 9 of our priorities for the upcoming election. We live in a beautiful area and we simply don’t want, or deserve, second best! ***Why we need an entry statement*** Despite attracting thousand of domestic and international visitors each year, there is little to mark the way from the Captain Cook Highway to Palm Cove, or announce the start of the Great Barrier Reef Drive – an iconic tourism drive connecting Cairns to Cape Tribulation. Preliminary concepts for an entry statement near the old Cairns Tropical Zoo site, include: Arrival signage on the western side of the Captain Cook Highway near Alexandra Street A roundabout at the intersection of the Captain Cook Highway and Palm Cove Boulevard with a second Palm Cove sign Pedestrian bridge over the highway with Great Barrier Reef Drive signage Palm tree groves lining both sides of the highway. As well a providing much-need place making, the entry statement will provide a lasting and positive first impression of the region, support broader destination marketing, improve traffic and pedestrian safety, and serve as a focal point for the community fostering a sense of pride and ownership among residents. https://lnkd.in/g-587Mpq #PalmCoveEntranceStatement #NoMoreStopLightsOnTheHighway #GreatBarrierReefDrive

Per the legislative requirement in Session Law 2023-134, the Division of Parks and Recreation is studying the feasibility of combining a hiking trail with a multipurpose active tourism rail line between the state line and Zirconia, NC, in the former Saluda Grade rail corridor. Saluda Grade is a historic rail line built in the 1800s to connect Spartanburg, SC, and Asheville, NC. It was the steepest standard-gauge mainline railway grade in the country, but the rail has been out of service since 2001. The study looks at the feasibility of a hiking trail (natural surface or greenway) and a multipurpose active tourism rail line (similar to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad) within the existing corridor. Would you use a “tourist train”? Paved greenway? Natural surface trail? Weigh in now at https://lnkd.in/enGvx_ei Survey closes on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024.

I have just been on a walk in Tasmania. Or more importantly, entered a national park. Cradle Mountain. AU$94 for the two of us. That was the best option - actually a 2 month pass because we were visiting a few national parks over a week. And in the US we also paid to enter the parks. Now I know under the Conservation Act, in NZ, access to the parks is free. Enshrined in law. But I also know with the Milford Opportunities Project - a master plan for a curated tourism experience to Milford Sound, that a special law can be implemented for certain areas. So why not do this. Why don’t we rapidly move to a toll on the Milford Road. Not for NZers - who actually just make up about 10% of Milford Sound visitors - we can stay as free - but for our international guests. Say $50. Everyone will pay. 800,000 people annually - $40m. To the Department of Conservation. Pass a law - fast tracked. Scrapped, or replaced by a different law, if ever the Milford Opportunities Plan is enacted. Because international travelers are used to these payments, whereas in NZ we give it away for free. A direct contribution to the cost of providing guest services and supporting infrastructure in New Zealand’s special places.
