Launched in 2005, Park(ing) Day is an annual event where people worldwide transform street parking spaces into small parks and spaces for art, play, and learning.? ? This event serves as a creative example of open-source urban design, accessible to everyone. This year’s theme, Native Plants, aligns closely with the work we do at Great Ecology. ? We’re excited to add our unique Southern California ecology perspective by partnering with Moosa Creek Nursery to create a beautiful, educational installation focused on the native plants of San Diego County. Our installation will feature species found in the county’s five major eco-zones: Woodlands, Grasslands, Coastal Sage Scrub, Riparian, and Coastal Strand (Dune). ? Some of the plants on display will include Sand Verbena, Beach Daisy, Shaw’s Daisy, Coyote Brush, Desert Willow, Salt Marsh Fleabane, California Poppy, Yarrow, Western Redbud, and many more! ? In addition to showcasing local plants and providing a relaxing space for visitors, we’ll offer informational materials, games, and more. ? We invite you to visit our installation in front of 2540 San Diego Ave., San Diego, CA, on Friday, September 20th, from 9 am to 4 pm, and explore the role of native plants in your urban environment! #ParkingDay2024 #NativePlants #Parks #UrbanDesign #GreenSpaces #SanDiego

Upon entering Louisville, Kentucky’s Cherokee Park from Eastern Parkway, traffic flows in a circular motion through a famed roundabout. The circular aspect of the landscape architecture echoes a sinister memory: the rotating winds of the F4 tornado that devastated the park in 1974. A few steps beyond the traffic circle is the Wildflower Woods trail. In this urban park frequently plagued by non-Indigenous plants like English ivy, bush honeysuckle and privet, Wildflower Woods offers a remarkable look at long-established plants that thrive when Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s Team for Healthy Parks removes non-Indigenous plants and restores biodiversity to natural areas. The experience of hiking the trail is like viewing a living museum, with ephemeral spring flowers like Dutchman’s breeches giving way to Jack-in-the-pulpit and other biodiverse flora throughout the seasons. Discover how community members in Louisville, Kentucky, have been restoring Cherokee Park following a devastating 1974 tornado. Sag Moraine Partnership Alert: Prairie Tour and Restoration Effort at Shooting Star Prairie in Bridgeview The Village of Bridgeview Village of Bridgeview, Township of Lyons’ Clerk’s Office, Sag Moraine Native Plant Community, and Tallgrass Associates are embarking on an exciting project to restore a hidden gem that is often overlooked in Bridgeview! Bridgeview’s Shooting Star Prairie is located on Harlem Avenue and 76th Street and is 12 acres of remnant and restored prairie. There will be a tour of the Shooting Star Prairie on Friday, June 14th from 10am-11:30am with a meeting spot in the Shark’s parking lot, weather permitting. The Shooting Star Prairie is home to many rare species of native plants, moths, crayfish, and more. The Shooting Star Prairie is a historically significant location, and a hopeful example of how focused ecological management does work to improve species diversity even when surrounded by commercial land use! The Village of Bridgeview, Township of Lyons Clerk’s Office, Sag Moraine Native Plant Community, and the Tallgrass Associates have formed a coalition of interested individuals and organizations to assist in the restoration and development of this local historical treasure. Our five- year plan includes the removal of invasive species, building of decks and seating, creating walking paths, addition of more visitor parking, and construction of educational signage. The goal is to make Shooting Star Prairie an accessible nature preserve that hosts educational opportunities, scientific research, and a place where residents can submerse themselves in a beautiful piece of Illinois history. In addition to the tour on June 14th, there will be a Clean-Up-The-Prairie Day on Friday, June 21st from 10am-12pm, weather permitting, and an Invasive-Species-Removal Day on Friday, June 28th from 10am to 12pm, weather permitting. For more information, please email Lyons Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg at [email protected]. Happy Park(ing) Day 2024! The transformation of our car dominated cities into livable, walkable, urban areas continues with the DIY urbanism of Park(ing) Day Participants. Transforming more of our paved areas into Parklets provides new opportunities for a variety of human activities and increased safety for pedestrians and cyclist. Repurposed Parking spaces have been used for some of the following activities; a wedding, urban farming displays, lawn bowling, marshland, and many more. This movement goes hand in hand with the city of San Franciscos new law which will prohibit parking within 20' of an approaching crosswalk. This open space will create greater visibility for drivers, thus protecting pedestrians and cyclist. To reduce the maintenance need of painting curb corners, this space can be retrofitted into new Parklets in the city. I commend Mithūn Architecture for creating a Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly habitat learning center at 585 Howard Street in San Francisco. Other endemic species to San Francisco such as the San Francisco Lessingea or Franciscan Wallflower may one day find new habitat in a Parking spaces, revitalizing the natural ecology of the city. What are some programs or activities you would like to see in a parking space near you?

"Conserving parks for present and future generations provides inspirational and therapeutic settings that foster lifelong connections with nature and each other. Parks that are valued and maintained are also fundamental to economic growth and vibrant and healthy communities." https://lnkd.in/gCYwhs4e Some big hitting lines in this statement but the one I will focus on is this: "Parks that are valued and maintained are fundamental to economic growth and vibrant and healthy communities." Value and maintenance are entwined with healthy people and economic growth. How does any Park manager prove that they maintain and value any of their Parks? A few proofs are immediate. 1. Signage: This is a Crown Reserve managed by X. 2. Management of any adjoining Crown land use that is known to have degrading impacts on the Park. Film is of N17 that I visited yesterday. N16 and N17 are Mortlake Victoria Lake Reserves. 31.6 and 44.1 ha of Laucustrine ecology - they are both salt lakes. Both managed by Parks Victoria on behalf of the community and the biodiversity of the State of Victoria. I noted that 1 -Signs are entirely absent. 2 - The Crown land around southern part of N16 is a Water Frontage license DEECA that is grazed to the edge of the lake right into the sensitive salt marsh ecology. Value these reserves enough to at least find an extra 2024-25 sliver of budget for two signs and a review of the Water Frontage permit. Steve Dimopoulos #conservation #saltmarsh

?? In the Los Angeles area of Southern California, many beaches are subject to mechanized beach maintenance activities such as grooming, non-natural sediment filling, driving, and seasonal berm construction. This has resulted in reduced biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, altered morphology, dune removal, and reduced vegetation cover. ???? At Santa Monica Beach, The Bay Foundation cordoned off a 3 acre area and dispersed native seeds in the sand, including beach evening primrose, sea scale, and flowering sand verbena. As the plants grow, they capture windblown sand beneath their branches and leaves, over time creating natural sand dune barriers that?protect against coastal erosion. The dunes have already reached between 1 and 3 feet tall (30 to 90 cm). By reestablishing this habitat, The Bay Foundation and its partners are able to affordably create beaches that are naturally resistant to sea level rise, while creating refuge for endangered species and adding natural beauty to the beach. Conservation Tip: Lights Out to Benefit Migrating Birds Did you know that city lights can be harmful to migrating birds? Billions of birds migrate south overnight in the fall and north in the spring, and they get confused when they see lots of city lights. Many bird species can be thrown off of their migratory paths, which can make them exhausted while flying around, eventually causing bird fatalities. The National Audubon Society’s Lights Out program encourages organizations and individuals to turn off lights during peak migratory seasons to reduce bird fatalities. Lights Out Columbus was established in 2012, and today, several buildings participate by pledging to reduce lighting. You can help at home, too! As we enter the fall season, consider these tips: Set up lights to the automatic motion sensor setting. Reduce exterior decorative lighting. If you live in a higher-story building, turn off interior lighting. When you’re updating your exterior lighting, make sure you avoid over-lighting. Together, we can help migrating birds reach their winter homes safely!

I sauntered Rickwood Caverns State Park's new Karst Trail on May 15, 2024, with Park Manager Bridgette Bennett, Northwest District Naturalist Amber Conger, and fellow Alabama State Park Foundation Board member Tom Cosby (and his wife Gail). I limit this photo essay to our Nature discoveries along the trail. This photo essay presents observations, reflections, 35 photographs, and three brief videos: ?https://lnkd.in/eXT3aXkG I offer these observations: 1. We sauntered if for no purpose other than to discover what we did not anticipate. 2. Sauntering through the forest we discovered treasures sufficient to extend the day and multiply our delight. 3. I pity those trail travelers busied with their digital device and content only to count their steps. 4. The last word in ignorance is the man who says of an animal or plant, "What good is it?"
