Think you're a great listener? Your team might not agree. One of the 21 Traits of Authentic Leadership is listening skills, which many leaders think they possess—until they find out they don't. True listening goes beyond hearing words. It's about holding space, fully absorbing someone's perspective, and resisting the urge to jump in with your response. Effective listening builds trust, strengthens relationships, and ensures everyone feels seen and heard. That's why authentic leaders listen to understand, not just reply. And it's a skill we all need to work on every day. Want to know more about the 21 Traits of Authentic Leadership? Had to laugh a little on this one. I am really bad to listen to answer or solve an issue, rather than listening to understand. My wife got to where she would tell me that she did need me to solve her problem, but rather to listen. 99% of the time she came up with her own solution.
#1 thing I am working on! It’s a daily battle to remind myself, but I’m stubborn and persistent, so I’ll get there. Thanks for this awesome reminder, Jan.
Great insight! Effective listening is a game-changer in leadership. When leaders truly listen, they build trust, strengthen relationships, and make better decisions.

2 周Jan Griffiths I feel called out. Like you I am working on listening, although my team at Seraph. might say I have a way to go. Listening to understand is important and hard; listening to reply is natural and much easier. Thank you for reminding us all to open our ears and shut our mouths.
