Lifting up this research: "the main reason for this disparity is that nonprofits led by or serving nonwhite people receive less revenue through both donations and grants — whether from the government, foundations, or corporations."

BWF's Joshua Birkholz wrote this great article for Forbes on the everyday donor that was published today! To face the challenges facing the philanthropic community and increase giving into the year-end, nonprofits need to adapt to better engage the everyday donor and build their competencies for high-net-worth and structured philanthropic audiences. Here are five ways nonprofits can increase giving in a high-inflation economy: https://hubs.li/Q02SQQrv0

Following a boost of funding during racial justice movements in 2020, there's been a notable decline in philanthropic support for nonprofits led by people of color. NFF's Aisha Benson discusses why it's more important than ever to provide sustained, long-term support. "Be a champion for change in the sector by helping clear the path for nonprofits to advance racial equity," writes Aisha. Mutual aid is a transformative approach to network building and street solidarity that aims to make sure everyone has access to necessities. Because these networks can be smaller, they are inherently limited in their reach. However, taking the philosophies that underscore these movements and applying the concepts to non-profit collaboration is a great idea, one that hopefully can better address the needs of those who seek support. Access to food, housing, and medical services are essential pieces of a functioning community, and nonprofits can certainly do a lot more to support those in their local communities. #Nonprofit #Justice #MutualAid

I have published my monthly op-ed in The Journal Record! This month, I wrote about strengthening nonprofits through capacity building! Based on my attendance at Philanthropy Southwest's annual conference and articles published by the National Council of Nonprofits, I know this topic is gaining momentum nationwide, which is encouraging for the stability of nonprofits. I have linked my op-ed below, I would love to hear your thoughts on it! #OKCNP #CenteredOnNonprofits #CapacityBuilding #Nonprofits #NonprofitSector #TheJournalRecord https://lnkd.in/gfUD_pce

Long-awaited confirmation of what charities like The Bromley By Bow Centre have been saying for years. Next-level transformation of communities is possible, if this approach is taken. #notforprofit #charity #community #communitytransformation #charityfunding
What happens when you give non-profit organisations a big dollop of unrestricted funding? I'd been aware or Center for Effective Philanthropy's ongoing study of the impact of MacKenzie Scott's donations, but I'd missed this summary of the after-effects of a previous grant-making initiative that trusted 21 organisations with large unrestricted donations over 5 years. This quote stood out for me and should be of interest to any donor who prioritises accountability and leadership in their grantees: "This was the first time I felt like I was actually the CEO running my organization — able to do what I thought was crucial for building the organization and increasing impact.” https://lnkd.in/esijZjhf

It's a powerful quote, Nick. And it echoes experiences featured in Making the case for Unrestricted Funding (https://lnkd.in/dFDPY5Yi): 'Unrestricted funding is the single most powerful thing that funders can do to support charities. It enables us to be agile and decisive in dealing with the ever-changing demands of the current uncertainty, while planning as best we can for whatever the future holds....Ultimately it means that we achieve more, help more people, and make more of a difference'.

Very insightful... financial freedom is an enabler of growth and transformation. This here is a great summary:.. Five years out, we did not see signs of a “lottery curse.” The nonprofits we studied did not buckle under the weight of large, unrestricted grants. To the contrary, they strengthened their organizations and leadership ranks, and they stewarded the funds with strategic rigor. They were able to innovate, adjust flexibly to new circumstances, and pursue new and more effective paths to scaling impact.
