It's a bird, it's a plane… it’s a UFO? Nope! Just the new lid for the bio solids tank at our WWTP project in Constantine, Michigan. Although this was taken a few weeks ago when the trees were still full of color, we think this view still holds up. Living shorelines are nature-inspired solutions that can help reduce wave energy and resulting erosion in coastal areas.?
Senior CFD Engineer - 3D Engineering Technology Professional - Fluid Dynamics Modeling - Multiphysics Simulations @ FLOW-3D
Living shorelines are nature-inspired solutions that can help reduce wave energy and resulting erosion in coastal areas. They have an added benefit of promoting bio-diversity, often acting as artificial oyster reefs! #CFD can be used for evaluating performance of these structures. Brian Fox, PE and I will be presenting a case study from Coast & Harbor Engineering on this topic in a FLOW-3D HYDRO webinar coming up THIS THURSDAY. Here is the link to register: https://lnkd.in/eRmx5dqY ?? There are various designs, shapes & products on the market, but here's a simulation I ran with the WAD? design from Living Shoreline Inc. (https://lnkd.in/eytg2SXB). In this example, we can see a 65% wave height reduction after the reef! Thanks Josh Carter and Scott Bartkowski for providing simulation data! #coastalresiliency #livingshoreline #3dmodeling #coastalengineering

?? Infraday PNW Videos Now Available! We’re excited to share that videos from Infraday Pacific Northwest are now available for viewing. Don’t miss one of our featured presentations: Presentation: The Washington State Department of Transportation Fish Passage Delivery Program: Protecting and Restoring Salmon Runs ?? For over 30 years, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has been working to protect and restore salmon runs by addressing fish barriers under state highways. Since 2013, this critical work has accelerated under a federal injunction, requiring the correction of hundreds of fish barriers over the next six years. This presentation dives into the multidisciplinary efforts of WSDOT, combining biology, hydraulics, engineering, and construction to improve fish habitats while ensuring public infrastructure is safe and resilient. Presenter: Kim Rydholm (Mueller), P.E., Fish Passage Delivery Director, WSDOT ?? Watch this inspiring presentation and learn about WSDOT’s innovative efforts, progress, and plans for the future. ?? https://lnkd.in/estBtVMV #FishPassage #SalmonRestoration #WSDOT #InfrastructureInnovation #SustainableDevelopment

????? It was a stormy yet beautiful day by the full Mississippi River and its roaring waterfalls when I DO TDA attended the seminar "Evaluating Older Bioretention System Performance and Soil Evolution" at the Water Resources Center in the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory. We were thrilled about the new discoveries in forebays, phosphorus management, and the impact of mulch in stormwater events. These findings highlight even greater potential for Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) in rain gardens than we initially anticipated. We're excited to continue exploring, learning, and proving TDA's value in urban and suburban stormwater management. ????? #SustainableEngineering #TireDerivedAggregate #StormwaterManagement #GreenInfrastructure #IDOTDA

I've been doing research on finding a?? #natured_based solution to reduce #scour under pipeline and I came a cross Coir rolls as a novel solution in order to control scour around pipeline, and found out Salix River and Wetland had already used it as a countermeasure method. We probably need more research about these kinds of methods to combat erosion in coastal area too. The advantages of Coir rolls I can mention are: ?First: Coir rolls absorb much more wave energy than seawalls, rock revetments, or other “hard” shoreline stabilization structures ?Secondly: The relative costs for coir roll projects could be: Low-medium for design and permitting. Medium-high for construction. Low-medium for maintenance. Low for mitigation. #net_zero #nature #environment #erosion #coastal_erosion

What the heck is a "vapor diffusion port" and do I need one in my unvented attic to meet the code? How many ways are there to put ducts "in conditioned space"? Why does everyone get so excited about "unvented" attics? What makes them so great? How did a 2005 disaster in Juneau, Alaska impact the 2018 residential building code? What's the "best" insulation to use when building an "unvented" attic?
