Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the 'To You' depot for a tour of their facilities. This enlightening experience reinforced the importance of continuous improvement in all aspects of our operations. Our hosts, CPM, are committed to Kaizen philosophies, holding quarterly meetings with representatives from CPM UK, Granby, To You, and HH Global to review successes, identify challenges, and collaborate on solutions. Our Client Services Manager, Kayleigh Scott, found the session particularly relevant. "CPM introduced us to Kaizen, which was new to me, although we have previously held similar meetings focused on improvement and lessons learned," Kayleigh said. Kaizen emphasises making small, positive changes over time for long-term success. At Granby, we already apply many Kaizen principles across various areas, including operational efficiency, customer service, supply chain management, and quality control. This aligns with our values of being solution-focused, collaborative, and supportive. The 5S concept in lean thinking can be applied to warehouses like this: 1. Sort: Remove unnecessary items (obsolete stock, broken equipment, etc.) and reduce unnecessary movement. 2. Straighten: Organize for efficiency, label locations, and place frequently used items within easy reach. 3. Shine: Clean thoroughly and regularly, and maintain equipment. 4. Standardize: Establish and display clear, simple processes. 5. Sustain: Ensure continuous improvement and adherence through audits and rewards. Some companies add a sixth S for “Safety”, emphasizing its importance in operations.

1. Visited the factory. 2. IDENTIFIED MAXIMUM TOP 3 CHALLENGES (through close observation and basic analysis of the process). 3. Discussed these with the management 4. Finalised action plan 5. Started working on specific agendas. You may call them quick wins/low hanging fruits. 6. Establish confidence. 7. Train the operators and ask them to do it. 8. You monitor progress and course correction. 9. Start small areas. 10. Call them kaizen through example. Involve the operators immediately. 11. You are good to go. NO JUMPING INTO LEAN TOOLS DIRECTLY WITHOUT ESTABLISHING A STRONG REASON FOR THEIR APPLICATION. But I can see most factories jump start with many lean tools without any objective. Result is....disappointment.
