Each year, an estimated 400,000 children and adolescents of 0-19 years old develop cancer worldwide. Childhood cancer cannot generally be prevented or identified through screening but if detected early, children stand a much better chance of survival. To help improve earlier diagnosis, we distribute signs & symptoms awareness cards which have also been brought to life in our #childhoodcancer awareness film. Help make a difference this #WorldHealthDay by sharing our awareness resources: https://ow.ly/1qYl50R6pb5 ?????? #CancerAwareness #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #EarlyDetection #ChildhoodIllness #HealthAwareness #CancerSupport #AwarenessCampaign

I can definitely see how this would be an issue I have a close family member that was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) about 10 years ago. In this 'chonic' phase, there are no real symptoms and life goes on. A few weeks ago, they noticed a problem with their vision in one eye. Turns out they had a bleed on their optic nerve, which can be associated with a big rise in White Blood Cell (WBC) count that occurs when CML progresses to the 'accelerated' phase (which signifies the disease is progressing). A blood test revealed their WBC is 'high'. They're now waiting for an appointment with the leukemia clinic, and obviously worried that maybe they're reaching a stage in their cancer where their condition is going to start causing noticeable ill health impacts and that treatment may now be needed to slow its progression. I asked what 'high' meant in respect of their WBC from the recent blood test, and they didn't know and were waiting to see what the clinic had to say. "Why didn't you just ask the doctor at the hospital when they got your results, didn't you want to know what they meant by a 'high' count?" The answer? "I wasn't really thinking straight so it didn't occur to me to ask. I just heard 'high' and that eye problems can be a sign it's getting worse". ?? ????????'?? ???????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???? ???? ????????'?? ?????????? ???? ???? ???? ??????... And that's why people with cancer are considered 'vulnerable customers'. Our brain wiring works on a survival-first basis. Anything that appears to threaten our ability to stay alive gets our attention. When we're given news about our mortality, our brains receive that message and our survival instincts kick-in. Anything that isn't directly and immediately relevant to our survival in the remainder of that conversation gets heard but not really listened to. Making decisions that involve finances or anything else when in this state of mind has lots of potential to go wrong for people, which is why extra safeguards are needed. It's good to see Cancer Support UK raising awareness of this issue and offering training to help organisations meet their obligations to vulnerable customers ??
A cancer diagnosis can make people uniquely vulnerable to making decisions that aren't in their best interests. A combination of worries about their prognosis, what it might mean for them and their loved ones, and the impacts of treatment can leave people feeling emotionally and physically drained, making it harder to remain focused and trickier to weigh the potential consequences of decisions. This is why cancer patients are entitled to?benefit from 'vulnerable customer' protections, but there's a danger that a lot of organisations with relevant legal obligations in this area, including social housing providers, don't fully recognise this. This recent Inside Housing op-ed from our CEO, Mark Guymer, goes into this in more detail, read it here ?? https://lnkd.in/e8iWR7TV #Cancer #VulnerableCustomer #SocialHousing

“Awareness is the foundation of prevention.” Did you know that men can develop breast cancer too? I encounter both men and women at our health workshops who are unaware of this reality. It’s so important to understand that breast cancer doesn’t discriminate by gender. Early detection is vital, and the first step is raising awareness. As we continue to have these conversations, we empower more people to take action and look out for their health. Have you spoken to the men in your life about this? It could make all the difference. #MensHealth #BreastCancerAwareness #CaringForEachOther #HealthEducation #HappyToHealthYou Learn more at Happytohealthyou.com

Precision medicine can be a lifeline for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer that has spread, returned, or is resistant to treatment. To-date, CCC has invested $670,000 to support PROFYLE treatment options for individual patients, significantly improving their outcomes. But there’s more work to do. Show your support to find new ways to treat hard-to-cure cancers! https://lnkd.in/gqjxJSdq #PROFYLE #childhoodcancerresearch

You never know who is following your work, that is why I continually push out what the needs of cancer patients are and how supporting can help someone following a diagnosis in hospital. Loved that BBC Three Counties reached out to ask if they could interview me today about The Lewis Foundation UK - why it was started, how it supports cancer patients in hospital and the community via the SMILE events and why do you continue to keep going when your family is now ok. Great conversation and opportunity to spread the word about the mission to support as many people as possible diagnosed with cancer in the hospital settings providing support direct to the person who needs it. It’s almost 8 years of The Lewis April (7th April) and my passion to help others has not declined because with the support of the community it is so wonderful to see the difference that collectively can be made to help another despite not knowing them and possibly never crossing paths.
