For the first time in years, I had to add the leaf to my dining room table. ? Through COVID and a series of other unfortunate events, my passion and love for entertaining had to go by the wayside for a time. But this year, I told my daughter it was time to take back things we'd lost and celebrating Easter would be one of them. ? I was inviting people to join us. I was making my ham with my original glaze. Corn casserole, too. ? She wasn't convinced. And honestly, I wasn't either. ? I put out an invitation to two in-person groups I am a part of. One of those groups is #GriefShare, which helps people walk through the loss of a loved one. The other is a monthly game group I started last fall at my house out of a personal desire to have more in-person connections. Online communities are great. But there is something to be said about connecting face to face, laughing, and sharing a meal. ? To my surprise, 9 people said yes. They were coming to share our Easter meal! ? Not all were Christians and I'm pretty sure every political ideology was present. But none of that mattered and it was never even brought up. One of my favorite parts of hosting is giving people the space and permission to be their authentic selves so no one feels like they must defend who they are. Guests are invited to just BE who they are. ? I have started to wonder if my eye for entertaining informs my instructional design process. Designing learning environments where people feel comfortable to be themselves allows them to drop their guard and fully engage in the learning process. It’s an interesting thought/parallel. ? In all, there were 11 of us at my house on Sunday. We accommodated for 3 more chairs, so no one had to sit at a card table. Watching everyone wiggle their chairs this way and that to make room so no one felt left out seemed fitting on a day in history focused on hope, renewal, and making space for everyone. ? I think I'll be leaving that leaf in my dining room table from now on. #creativity, #entertaining, #instructionaldesign, #whatinspiresme, #Easter
