On March 17, Newsday Media Group published an op-ed regarding the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) on why the state should boost TAP funding for college. The article states: "The State Senate and Assembly are contemplating somewhat different proposals, but they are close enough in scope that Gov. Kathy Hochul should agree to include a boost in TAP grants in the upcoming 2024-25 budget. Both legislative proposals would raise the eligibility income thresholds to $125,000 from the current $80,000, recognizing the financial stress that many families incur sending their children to college. Under both plans, the minimum TAP award would increase from $500 to $1,000. A Senate proposal raises the maximum award from $5,665 to $6,165. Advocates say these increases would particularly help those living in high-cost areas like Long Island. ?? Fixing Education in England: A Marathon, Not a Sprint ?? The Autumn Budget has everyone talking about education—but the big question is, how fast can real change happen? Challenges like underfunded schools, teacher shortages, and a “broken” SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) system are immense, and experts agree it will take time to see results. Here’s what we’re hearing: Some leaders want urgency ??: NEU’s Daniel Kebede believes new funding isn’t enough and says the government needs to "move faster" to tackle immediate issues in classrooms. Others see it as a cautious start ??: ASCL’s Julia Harnden says there are positives in the Budget but warns that investments in skills and infrastructure fall short of the system’s needs. Looking ahead to 2024 ??: Paul Whiteman from NAHT views this as a “start based on good intentions,” but he emphasizes that a real impact will require more ambitious investments in next year’s spending review. As the government takes these first steps, many hope the pace will pick up next year. It’s clear we need a sustained, multi-year commitment to build a resilient education system for our students, teachers, and communities. #EducationReform #SchoolFunding #SEND #FutureofEducation

NASFAA recently signed on to a letter ?? urging leaders of the House Appropriations committee to reject proposed cuts to programs that provide financial assistance to students pursuing postsecondary education. ?? The letter comes in response to the fiscal year 2025 bill for the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, which contains an overall request of $68.1 billion to the Department of Education (ED), a reduction of $11 billion from the fiscal year 2024 enacted level and $14.5 billion less than the president’s budget request. The measure would flat-fund the Pell Grant program and cut funding in half for the campus-based aid programs. #HigherEd #HigherEducation #FinancialAid #StudentAid #EducationPolicy

?? Navigating Budget Cuts in Education: Insights from District Leaders ?? As the era of federal pandemic relief funds draws to a close, school districts across the country are confronting difficult decisions to address shrinking budgets. From New Jersey to Alaska, district leaders like Kari McGann of Flemington-Raritan School District are tasked with balancing financial constraints while prioritizing the needs of students and educators alike. McGann reflects, "We peel away layers of the onion as far away from the core as we can. But eventually we’re going to touch that core." ???? The impact extends beyond mere numbers; it affects educational equity and community well-being. Cuts in essential services like after-school programs and bilingual support disproportionately impact vulnerable students, exacerbating educational disparities. Advocacy groups are urging for federal guidance to ensure these decisions do not violate civil rights laws, underscoring the need for equitable solutions in budget planning. ??? Amidst these challenges, there is a call for innovation and collaboration. Leaders are exploring new avenues for funding and advocating for sustainable financial support to maintain educational excellence. It's crucial to foster dialogue and share best practices to support districts in navigating these turbulent waters while preserving the core mission of providing quality education to every student. Reach out to Bluum today for support in navigating these critical decisions and ensuring a brighter future for our students. ?????? #EducationLeadership #BudgetCuts #StudentEquity #EducationFunding

?? I’m “sitting tight” as I hear what is going to happen with the Department of Education under the incoming administration. There are so many implications if the Department of Education is dissolved—some easy to understand—others very complicated. One of the more complicated ones, is school and school district funding. ???? Very few TRULY and deeply understand the landscape of how education is financed. Even those in charge of education finances will tell you it is a maze that few can navigate—let alone explain. Hence I am not even going to attempt that here. What I will say though is that most schools get their funding through federal, state, and local means. The proportion from those three sources differs by locale. ?? Many school districts get an abundant proportion of their funding through local property taxes. Then there are states—like CA—who don’t. (Remember Prop.13?) ??My question is 2-pronged and relatively simple (tongue firmly implanted in cheek) in relation to the complicated issue of education funding: ??How will funding for programs/schools currently receiving federal funds, be compromised if the Department of Education is dissolved and how will that DIRECTLY affect students? ??Just a simple question to ponder this morning… #EDLINKS #EducatingTheNewHumanity to #AwakenAndLiftHumanity to #SeeGoodDoBetter

"The core schools budget will increase by £2.3 billion next year to “support” the government’s pledge to hire thousands more teachers. The chancellor Rachel Reeves also announced during her budget speech today that she was providing a £1 billion uplift in funding to support work to reform the system for pupils with special educational needs." This sounds positive at face value, however "the £1 billion will come from the overall £2.3 billion school funding uplift, and the government’s own documents suggest most of it will go towards covering SEND deficits." I am unsure whether this money will make enough of an impact for those most vulnerable pupils in schools who are at breaking point. I will be watching closely and truly hope that the system can be improved for all stakeholders. #education #primaryeducation #secondaryeducation #earlychildhoodeducation #post16 #send #sendcrisis #government #educationreform #inclusivelearning #equalitydiversityinclusion #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #neurodivergent https://lnkd.in/ea_hrqJc
