We're not just talking about crowd control, we're also talking about their ongoing battle against human trafficking. ??The Super Bowl and other major sporting events serve as an opportunity for traffickers seeking to exploit vulnerable individuals. This exploitation often requires a coordinated and proactive response from law enforcement agencies. ?? While it is not popular to speak about the association of such a beloved event and such a heinous crime, it's important that we do so we can protect the most vulnerable members of our communities. This documentary {https://lnkd.in/e9UjytEz has served as a timely reminder (with National Anti-Slavery Week and Day (18th October) imminent) of why it is incredibly hard for businesses to tackle modern slavery, with criminals determined to infiltrate businesses in order to be able to exploit vulnerable individuals. It is also why we have policies, procedures and due diligence measures in place today aimed to pick up indicators of modern slavery and why we continue to develop these further as new instances like this are brought to light. I’m somewhat reassured that we are also able to take learnings from instances that we identify ourselves, prior to any media or authority intervention, as a direct result of the work we have done already. Was it tough to watch? Absolutely. Any decent human being would never want to see someone else being exploited as these survivors were. Do I wish some of the controls and due diligence measures we now have in place would have been there at the time we had a business link to the site in question? Without a doubt and there were reasons for them not being there at the time. Would we catch everything now? Whilst I’d like to think so, the realistic side of me says no, sadly not. This is however what provides us with the drive to do what we can and continue to improve. What is definite however, is that we will continue to find ways to close gaps that might allow modern slavery to infiltrate, but the sad likelihood is that until there is collective action, what instead will happen is that the criminal behaviour driving this will either find a different weak link or try the same elsewhere. Always more to do, but I’m proud to be part of a team and business that is doing what it can to stop modern slavery.

Do human trafficking investigators need to be experts? I once had a conversation with a head of the human trafficking unit in one state. The person said that "we all don't need to be experts" and refused to get training on the illicit parlor business. She asked the same questions that I would ask to any basic human trafficking 101 training, hoping that she'd receive enough information to tackle these businesses. ??♀? I AGREE. Law enforcement officers ( and compliance officers, for that matter) do not need to be experts on the subject. ?? BUT they need to know ENOUGH to investigate the complex networks behind human trafficking. At minimum, they need to know as much as the criminals do to exploit the victims, if not a little more.
