“I feel like it’s going to be impossible sometimes.” For most of this year, I’ve been reading through responses to our Spotlight survey, where over 8,000 Year 7 to 13s responded to a question on their worries about their next steps after school or college. Reading the responses was tough. Young people are worried, and they have every reason to be. I remember feeling intimidated by the baffling and mysterious world of getting a job, but I wasn’t living through a pandemic and a cost-of-living crisis. I wasn’t worried about supporting a hypothetical family or becoming homeless, like the responses I’ve read in our survey. What’s clear is that these young people need help. 51% of the young people who responded to our survey said they were worried. 24% said decision making was their biggest concern. 14% said money was. Some of the respondents were eleven years old. Year 7s worrying about whether they’ll make enough money to live. But there are ways we can all help. Brightside’s online mentoring programmes are proven to help young people make confident and informed decisions about their future. But we need more support to run these life-changing programmes. Listening to young people is vital, and at Brightside we do that all the time. This year we’re sharing some of the things they’ve told us about their worries. They told us that as well as having people to listen to them, many many young people are desperately looking for information, advice and guidance to help them when they make decisions about their futures. We remain passionate about, and focused on, helping provide that advice, guidance and crucially mentoring support to young people across the UK. We know that young people from less advantaged backgrounds often have less access to these tools and resources, sustaining a deeply unfair cycle of disadvantage that we are determined to break. The scarring effects of COVID, coupled with the soaring cost of living, have dimmed the prospects for many young people. Yet, with tech advancing rapidly and more information available to students than ever, why do they feel more confused and isolated about their futures? Simply put, they're overwhelmed. Too much information, not enough guidance. And with career advice in schools dwindling, students are left to navigate their futures alone, often encountering conflicting advice. During my time as a Trustee at Brightside, I've seen how we can turn this around—through mentoring. By connecting students with professional mentors across the UK, we're seeing real results: better grades (4.5 higher at GCSE) and a higher likelihood of university completion. Most importantly, we're giving students the tools to make informed decisions about their futures. Policymakers have struggled with these issues for years, but we know this model works. There is a decision making crisis and we need to do something about it. At Brightside we have the privilege of listening to young people as they think about their future, and right now we are more worried than ever because THEY are more worried than ever. At a time when the UK needs young people from all backgrounds to step confidently into their aspirations to help solve the skills shortage and build a fairer society, those young people are telling us they are worried about making choices, and they don't see a bright future for themselves. 51% of young people are worried about their next steps after school or college. That is way too many. 24% of those were worried about making decisions. They talked about feeling overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin and fear of making the wrong choice. Young people need help making decisions about their future. If we don’t help them now it will have disastrous consequences for the already widening disadvantage gap. They need a guide. They need a mentor.
