Two bads do not make one good What has happened at the Mexican Embassy in Quito Ecuador is an unprecedented act carried out by a democratic government. Many of us could expect a similar situation in a country with an authoritarian regime, but never from the Ecuadorian government. What makes this case very special is the fact that the Mexican government, under the mandate of President López Obrador, is a clear supporter of giving support and political asylum to members of the Left from any Latin American country. We well know that former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo was heading to the Mexican embassy in Lima, Peru, which would have given him asylum, even knowing that he had tried to carry out a coup d'état in Perú. Accepting to give political asylum to a person accused of corruption is not part of the principles that underpin the 1951 Convention, nor the 1967 Protocol. This does not mean that the actions of the Ecuadorian Government are acceptable and its consequences can be devastating for the future of international relations. My opinion in this regard is that the Ecuadorian Government preferred to act considering that June 2, 2024, are the presidential elections in Mexico and that it is very likely that the candidate Claudia Sheinbaun of the MORENA-PT-PVEM party will be the new President of Mexico. , and it is preferable to apologize to the new government than to allow Jorge Glas to go to Mexico and from there to a country that does not have an extradition treaty with Ecuador. Only time will tell, if my analysis is correct or not.

Friday in beautiful Tirana I had the opportunity to address political officials, people from business and civil society as well as media representatives regarding the integration process with the six Western Balkans states. I conveyed my optimism based on the proposed composition of the new European Commission. Probably it will be quicker, more focused to what really matters and more reliable than the previous one. I will contribute to that parliamentarily. This very week we will finally draft the EPP‘s proposals in terms of content. They will outline the way ahead for the new European Commission. #World #Europe #WesternBalkans #EU #EuropeanCommission #MandlStatement

As we await updates from our political leaders following the IEC's final results announcement, it’s clear that a Coalition Government is on the horizon for South Africa. This news is stirring international markets, raising concerns about potential instability. But what exactly is a Coalition Government, and what does it mean for us? A Coalition Government forms when no single party secures a majority, leading parties to work together to govern. This can bring diverse perspectives but also pose challenges with differing ideologies. As the ANC prepares to enter coalition talks, the political landscape could shift dramatically. Will it be an ANC-DA coalition or an ANC-EFF alliance? South Africans are waiting with bated breath. https://lnkd.in/dyx54_89

South Africa's foreign policy should defend the country's domestic interests, that is promote economic growth, attract new investments and expand the country's exports. Foreign policy should encourage domestic social peace. South Africa is a constitutional democracy, which means the country should in its foreign policy support democracy, human rights and individual freedoms. As the world's most diverse society, situated at the junction of two great oceans, South Africa's foreign policy must be one of engaging and trading independently with all countries. SA's domestic economic fortunes depends on strengthening itself as a trade nation - growing and manufacturing products for export. Foreign policy cannot be past-based either. Neither can foreign policy be fundamentalist or based on outdated Cold War-era considerations. There has to be a dose of pragmatism in foreign policy. SA's government of national unity, that came to power after 29 May 2024 general election, is a new multiparty government, and not a one-party government. This means that SA's foreign policy cannot be based on one party's interests. Prior to the GNU, when the ANC was a one-party government, the country's foreign policy was largely based on the ANC's party interests. Finally, South Africa's must maintain its independence and must never be vassal of any other country. Speaking recently to eNCA. https://lnkd.in/dpVkFj2v
